MikeB4: the non responsive Start menu.
Rikkitic: OK now I'm really angry. I just lost a lengthy post as I was posting it. Text completely vanished into cyberspace, no trace, no possibility of recovery. Second time it has happened. This time I was able to definitely determine that it happened because #$#~@#$~$#!% Windows 10 decided to force an update on me at the exact moment I tried to post. I could see that from the time stamp on the notification that the update failed (We can't finish downloading your update... etc.)
Why does a megacorporation like Microsoft keep coming up with these kinds of utterly idiotic stupid counter-productive moronic brain-dead ideas? This forced update crap absolutely undermines the usefulness of Windows 10. I have updates turned off as far as Windows lets me but this kind of thing keeps happening. The people responsible for this unbelievably stupid short-sited policy need to be taken out and shot. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb. How much are those idiots being paid?

Windows 10 pro has the option of turning them off altogether.
MikeB4: Ignoring the melt down of my Surface which MS are replacing I am constantly fixing or looking for fixes for issues. They are generally minor except the Photo app issue I had and the non responsive Start menu.
The last time I had this level of problems with a Windows edition was Windows ME, even Vista was more stable.
It seems to me that MS are just not doing an appropriate level quality assurance, maybe staff cuts are hurting in this area.

I feel exactly the same way. They need to go back to QA the way it was post Vista. Vista itself wasn't the nightmare people thought it was, it was hurt by Intel having a Lot of old inventory that they put MS under pressure to say was Vista compatible when it wasn't, and secondly, because of MS's long standing history of making last minute changes to it's driver systems, the big companies refused to create drivers for Vista until it went Gold, and severely underestimated the amount of work involved.
Vista itself was a very stable core product, very little was actually changed between Vista and 7 in terms of core base code.
W10 is a nightmare for stability.
JWR:
I can no longer shutdown my PC.
This is an issue from one of the updates.
The initial Windows 10 upgrade didn't have this problem.
FWIW.. CPU: 5820K, AsRock X99 Extreme 4, Corsair 860i PSU, Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming - I think that is all that could affect the issue.
I have done searches. But, not found anything useful.
Also, I am familiar with all the control panel power settings. No problem there.
Probably some registry setting that updates have not dealt with correctly.

Is it the same with you, did you also do an upgrade, rather than a fresh install?

Ahhh, so you upgraded, rather than did a fresh install?
Well that hasn't really ever worked right. I tried windows xp and 7 to 8, and it just completely died. I also tried 7 to 10, and it failed during installation. Lucky really, those upgrades over wildly different OS versions, are always a major headache - much much much better to do a fresh install.
Worth just migrating your files, e-mail etc, and re-installing all the software on a fresh windows 10.
No wonder your having problems there is some old obscure registry setting that windows 10 couldn't possibly have factored in.
I mean, I'd do an upgrade on a basically fresh system, such as the factory state of a windows 7 or 8 machine, just to better capture obscure drivers - with next to nothing program wise installed, or settings changes, but otherwise, just don't do it - fresh install has been the only clean/stable/safe way to upgrade a windows version, since IDK, like the 90s...
I am looking for the post that goes something like
"Windows 10 installed updates from manufacturer but I don't want the manufacturer's drivers update."
How do I stop windows from doing that? [searched high and low but can't find that post / or the answer.
Keep calm, and carry on posting.
