MikeB4: Have a look here

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2570-esd-iso-create-bootable-iso-windows-10-esd-file.html

Thanks :) My W10 install is pretty borked, I'm not even sure it'll download the latest build. Event viewer won't run, uploading files using any web browser locks it up more often than not, etc. I guess I'll just get the latest ISO and then upgrade from there.

Separate question: how are they getting the RTM build out to insiders more quickly than others? Will W10 alert you? Do you then have to go back and install W7 SP1 / 8.1 to get the upgrade, and if so how does it know you're an insider? With W7 I just use local accounts.

Tenforums is the best place to keep up with win 10 stuff. Like 10162 is now out!

This is as good a reference as you'll find:-  http://www.tenforums.com/general-discussion/7340-frequently-asked-questions-about-windows-10-free-upgrade.html

Checking for updates will get you a new version.

No, you don't need to go back and re-install w7 or w8.1 to get upgraded. You are known as an insider with your MS login because you registered yourself.

I think reading the ref above will answer most of your questions.

Interesting, thanks. Since I did a fresh install rather than an upgrade of W7 I'll probably miss out. I guess I'll just upgrade to the latest preview, then once W10 is in full release and a couple of months old I'll wipe it, reinstall W7, then upgrade.

Still don't think it's a well thought out process. Letting people enter their W7 key during the install would've been pretty simple.

Did you enter a Key or did it pick it from your UEFI? If it picked it up you should be OK as it will be a legit key

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I can't remember if I had to enter a W7 key or not. It was from an ISO onto a fresh SSD, I'm not sure it asked for any kind of a serial number at all. I think it's a fresh install of W10 with no W7 serial.

nathan:
networkn: What is the point of MS releasing 3 BUILDS in 1 WEEK? Who would have time to install 3? Let alone test and provide quality feedback on them?

builds come out every week day

so normally at least 5 a week

these ones we are releasing are all very high quality

I'm not sure why it is taking you so much time to install them.
My PC downloads and installs them around 3AM every night, and I logon to my PC when I getup about 530AM and its there

at this point people are using Windows 10 as their daily driver so are providing feedback on if we fixed things they told us about

This is the first time I've ever seen 3 in a week.  Normally  one a month if I'm lucky.

There was a guy on the NZ Tech Podcast a few weeks ago by the name of Giorgio Sardo, who said that W10 would RTM the day before release. Can probably take it with a grain of salt but it will be interesting to see what happens.

In the past there has usually been a bigger gap between RTM and release, but everything about W10 to date has been different and refreshing.

Interesting to see what happens with more than one system sharing the same Online login User account..

I suspect I will only be eligible for 1 upgrade even though I have 3 machines which were running windows 7 but now 10.

I have downgraded 1 back to 7 and registered for the upgrade but the other two are still running 10 and sharing the same online login. hmm

I'm sure upgrades are based on your Windows License key...not your user account.

I have multiple PC's all logged into a Microsoft account, they just sync user settings (like wifi passcodes and colour schemes)

The machines running Windows 10 have no license key.. I wiped the drives and installed Win10, no license required.. The only identifiable information microsoft could have to differentiate them is my logon and hardware hash of the PC.

Surely I don't have to wipe windows 10, Install 7, wait for the upgrade to become available then upgrade back to Win10.. Although I wouldnt put it past Microsoft to have to do this :)
