If I recall correctly this was in the developer preview build and didn't work in the consumer preview build

Outrage? The beauty of Windows is its flexibility and your choices. You're not locked into what software you can run, you have an open platform

I have seen many IT departments and CIOs here locally in NZ that hated Windows 8 without using it at all or use it for only 5 minutes or only try it in a Virtual Machine, and totally thought their users would hate it. But been surprised with the productivity and enjoyment their users have had in the modern reimagination of the Windows Start menu after actually trying it

If you don't like the Modern UI Start Screen in Windows 8:

You can right click task bar and add a toolbar to add a hunt and peck Start Menu like I previously mentioned

Download one of the numerous free or paid start menu add ons

Use Windows 7

Switch platforms to Mac OSX, Chrome OS or even something like Linux Mint with the Cinnamon add on

Yes Nathan it caused outrage in the Windows community when MS took away the ability previously available in the developer preview to switch metro off. I am not saying there aren't other choices, I am simply stating there is plenty of evidence to support that people were seriously unhappy when that feature was removed.

TOTALLY Hate Windows 8 and I am supposed to sell it. Try showing older customers how to use it when they are perfectly comfortable going from XP to Windows 7. No probs, but windows 8, too confusing. Long may Windows 7 remain available.

this is a interesting discussion to hear your guys feedback

I've seen older folk love Win8 when they get used to it. They love the big tiles that are easier to click, they can have just the apps they use pinned to start in a logical order that makes sense to them. they can have their kids and grandkids Facebook profiles pinned as a tile and photos cycling around as a tile

once they got used to the change they wondered why they ever were hunting and pecking around a tiny little start menu with a mouse.

I agree, you've got to eat the dog food if you're going to sell it.

I switched to windows 8 on my laptop and bought a Windows 8 phone.

Not without it's issues, but it's fine if you make the effort to learn

While I don't think Win8 is quite ready for release in the enterprise, I'm finally getting used to it. There are a few UI features that still don't make sense to me but they're reasonably minor.

It's funny... Many of the complaints I see today are the same as I saw when Windows 95 came out!

Somehow this reminds me of the Linux world and the reaction to the Gnome 3 desktop.
New and different. Some loved it and others hated it.

Gnome 3 required a graphics card with good hardware acceleration support in the linux distribution, which wasn’t needed in Gnome 2.
Windows 8 seems reasonable when the hardware is a touchscreen laptop, but not so nice on a traditional mouse, keyboard and non-touch monitor pc.
Both Gnome 3 and Windows 8 give a poor impression when used in a virtual machine.

Depends what is considered a failure.
Some people would say if it doesn’t outsell the previous version, it’s failure.

I’m not expecting a large number of corporate workplaces to adopt Windows 8 in the near future.
But if the corporate world keeps buying Win7 licenses and Win8 sells ok in the consumer space, maybe that's ok for Microsoft.

I loved Windows 95. It was a big step forward from 3.1.

In fact the OS was so popular that soon after the launch of Windows 95 Microsoft's sales overtook Apple for the first time.

+1 to this - windows 95 was a quantum leap to what came before!

Our neighbour who is not terribly computer literate wanted to get new computer to replace her 6 year old compaq running XP. She bought a new laptop and brought it over to me to setup their wifi and email word programs. It runs windows 8. I told her to try it as is and if she has trouble, I can put a start menu and make it look and feel similar to XP. I said just try the tiles first. Well she loves it and prefers the tiles to the XP. She is 75. Just goes to show cant always judge

Love Windows 8. Simply moving the mouse to the corners brings up Start screen from desktop, or Charms bar. Right clicking bottom left brings up a menu with Event Viewer etc. And right clicking on Metro brings up the All Apps option.

I find it fast, stable and much better than Vista, XP etc.

My only gripe with it maybe my own doing. I like to have image backup so using the backup in control panel I did a backup which claimed was successful. But when trying to use that backup Windows 8 would not find it even though it was right there still. Tried it on 3 different computers with same result. So looks like when I go back to it will have to use another backup program

yes I used that but after saying successful when testing it to recover it comes up blank and cant find the image it created

Windows 95/98 had a hopeless backup utility so I always used a 3rd party program which came with the HP tape drive etc. XP's backup utility still wasn't great, so I stuck with the 3rd party software. I tried Vista Backup once on a colleague's laptop and gave up in disgust. On Windows 7, MS finally got it right, and I can backup all PCs in the house to a NAS -- easy peasy and it just works.

Now it seems in Windows 8 it is broken again and doesn't include File Recovery unless you hunt for it, and Image Backup is gone. As Gilco2 has pointed out, it cannot find the image created on a different PC, which is pretty much the whole point of doing a backup in the case where your hard drive fails.

Why oh why couldn't MS leave well enough alone and keep something that worked?

Maybe if they fix this I would consider Windows 8 on a future PC, but otherwise I'll be "upgrading" to Windows 7.
