nathan: You need to have a genuine activated OS to upgrade from, which we use to check you have an eligible OS
Once that check is performed your Windows 10 key is stored in the Cloud and you can fresh install as many times as you like.on that hardware
Bits to do this will.release on July 29
minimoke: Thanks for all your helpful replies nathan. I am now locked an loaded on 6 laptops around home.
My question is: Is there a preferred upgrade path - do I use my broadband allowance (I'm on ADSL2 copper with enough left in this months allowance) and upgrade each individual laptop. Or should I download one ISO file, burn it and then upgrade the other laptops off that?
(i'd have to say this has been a remarkably simple process so far. No difficulties at all getting the wee Windows 10 icon in my system tray - I've used this as an excuse to resurrect old laptops from the back of the cupboard with Win7 and clean installed them so they are nice and fresh and ready to go)
networkn:nathan:networkn:nathan:antoniosk:freitasm: If I reserve a copy from the popup do I have to install it?
good point - sony has asked owners to wait for driver support in august on this lappie
If the machine isn't compatible the reservation prompt will not activate
Is there a manual check we can do to check or confirm eligibility?
A compatibility check or a license check or.something else?
Well I don't have the pop up for reservation on one of my PC's despite having the Update installed which supposedly provides the ability to reserve it, so I am trying to determine for what reason it's been deemed it's ineligible or if there is another technical issue preventing it.
Dreal: Neither have I. But then I haven't done anything, it's just a fresh install of 8.1 home, with nothing added.

I haven't had the upgrade app/notification appear on any of my machines yet.

There is a script there you can run which will fire off the Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser
richms: I have a couple of useless machines with a win 7 or vista license stuck to them. Useless as in low spec core 2 era machines I bought ex lease.
Anyway. they are just sitting there at the moment doing nothing. I was planning on chucking a cheap i3 and 16 gigs and SSD into them.
Will I have to upgrade them, put 7 on it, activate it and then update, or can I put the 7 key from the case in when installing 10?
What if I have a machine die? How does it activate when I replace the motherboard etc in the machine with new ones? Will the call up and type numbers in only to have to give them to the person and then have a whole lot of numbers given back routine still work?
richms: So how will the activation work on a case when there is significant hardware changes needing a complete re installation?

the same way it does today
