a new issue , one of many. (below) . Issues with 1803 Intel SSD's .
1803 is looking like a nail in the coffin for MS's credibility .
Many corporate clients have zero tolerance & zero patience for this sort of thing (update issues) . I dread the day I have to supply those
clients a Win10 PC

@dynamic I know you supply some Intel SSD's, thought you might find that advisory of interest.

What are you supplying now!?

Early W8 was despicable, as was early W10, but it's a *LOT* more stable now. I agree MS is doing a very poor job with QA for the past 5 years and doesn't listen to it's partners as much as it had previously, but considering the risks of running a W7 machine now, we would only supply these in the most specific of situations.

@networkn thank you VERY much.  We are crazy busy and might not have spotted this.

Updated all work pcs and no issues. My old Shuttle which a friend has went into endless reboots and even restore and full wipe crashes. Says Critical Process Died so looking like might be this. Gone to better tech hands than mine to try sort.

Hmmm. Work Surface gave me the option of installing Windows 10 1803... After some time "working" it asked me to restart to finish the install - and nothing. Multiple restarts later and this machine is still on 1709 - even though the software distribution centre says 1803 is installed.

https://www.windowslatest.com/2018/05/09/windows-10-kb4103721-bugs/

The first major update to Version 1803 of Windows 10 has arrived on my computer, but I'm hesitant to install it because, as per the above article, this has caused users to complain about various bugs in it.

Has anyone downloaded update KB 4103721, is it wise to do so yet? There's not much point in installing this update if people now seem to be uninstalling it because of all the problems it causes!

With the large number of different types of computers and configurations do you think it's an almost impossible task to get Windows 10 going properly on all machines.

We used to supply Win10 PC's downgraded to Win7.
Thats no longer an option

Last PC I sold , I needed to downgrade to 7, but found MS will no longer support Win7 on new CPU's etc
Win7 installs, MS simply wont give it any windows updates ( Windows update gives a popup saying not supported )

So from now on its hope like hell the clients old software works on Win10 .
Same thing with Outlook 2016 & old Exchange versions. Scramble around to find a 2010 key & downgrade the Office install.

I am not saying I agree with MS's decision on this (It's so poor it's surprising to me a class action wasn't filed), but MS gave reasonable notice about this. We contacted our customers and told them of the upcoming plans and told them they had to prepare their business for it.

This meant going back to their software vendors and notifying them they had x period of time to update their own software, or helping the customer test, or helping the customer find a working alternative.

Quoting myself to offer a solution... Ran Disk Cleanup in Admin mode, removed all the Windows Update files and the update was offered again. This time the installation worked fine and running 1803 now.

First update to 1803 on desktop and laptop went ahead last week … took about 3 hours.  Desktop needed three reboots to finally 'settle down' and complete all 'working on update' messages, laptop seemed to do it in one hit.

Six days later the cumulative update (KB4103721) came along, and both computers accepted it with no hesitations etc.

Checked things like USB ports, microphone, camera etc etc …. no problems detected on either machine.

As Nathan has advised, To get this to install on a machine with an affected SSD you have to manually initiate this update.

Corporate clients shouldn't really be on this build yet until it is deemed broad deployment ready (See https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/surface/2017/07/28/the-windows-semi-annual-channel-and-targeted-deployment

In my experience with enterprise Windows 10 deployments no one except for the first ring of pilot users would have this update yet. A typical production release would be 3-6 months from now depending on testing allowing for any of this bugs to be resolved with monthly roll ups. (We're only pushing 1709 to our production fleet now).

Smaller customers can solve this by controlling the release of the update in WSUS.

6 year-old generic (PB Tech, AMD) desktop, nearly new el cheapo HP laptop, HDD replaced with SDD, both updated with no problems.  Now on to my Intel Compute Stick (3 years) and that may be interesting, given the lack of memory--but seems to be going fine.

I LOVE the timeline feature -- helps amazingly.  Worth the time spent just for that.

Compute stick updated fast and perfectly.  15-year old NEC laptop failed because of an old display driver, back on Win 7.

But I have found a trap for young players in Timeline:  Couple of days ago I used Timeline to open a word file that I'd been working on for ages (and which had lots of reviewing edits -- which may or not be important) and I *think* I clicked on an instance that was not the last instance.  When I came to save it, it wouldn't, and reported it was unable to merge (which is what makes me think that it wasn't the last instance).  Tried saving as another file name, no go.  Lost all that day's edits.  Bugger.  Yes, I have it set to save every 10 mins, but there was no backup file when I looked.

Timeline might need a bit of a look at, if you're reading this, SatNad.
