richms: Ok worked on the slow 16 gig stick second time around.

Its now "preparing" on the lappy so will see how this goes.

Edit: Ok, its asking for a key, which I dont have because this is a windows 8.1 machine with it inbuilt anyway.

FFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!

Are you trying to upgrade or clean install? A clean install won't work the first time round.

Upgrade. I had the pro one and was trying it on the lptop which can only get home on it. Gaming PC should take pro but it part installs then wants to boot the USB stick and do a fresh install so I will change the boot order to legacy only and try again once its undone all it did.

Yeah, like for like only so Home to Pro would require you to buy a license.

Oh, and when it reboots you should be able to take the USB stick out as everything will be on the HDD (at least that is the way it has worked in previous versions like 8 and 7).

i was going to watch tv but this thread has provided me with much evening entertainment! looks like i'll just stick to my 8.1 until such time. creating bootable usbs is not for the faint hearted

Am still getting the frowning face with a page fault in a non paged area error on the gaming PC when it reboots to do the stuff even with it set to legacy only. That does stop it trying to boot off the stick and doing a fresh install but still not working.

Also, should I be able to run the 32 bit stick creator on a 64 bit machine? Beause I just get a small window with only an ok button that makes it close. Guess I will have to stand in the cold of the garage to make the 32 bit stick to try to upgrade the US$100 computer with 8.1 with bing on it to 10 with no bing.

The tool you download does it for you if you want. It is really rather easy IMO :)

has this even been a problem for you before? Windows has had this anti piracy feature for ages

if it ever does not automatically activate over the internet after a reinstall you can call 0800 800 004

Yes, often. Its really annoying. Lets test this video card out in another machine to see it it crashes all the time. Oh hello microsoft activation failing.

Lets swap this dire 2x2 2.4GHz N only minipcie wifi card out for an ac capable one. Again, windows wants activation. Same when swapping out the drive for a larger one or a SSD.

That means a fresh installation. What will 10 do in that case, even if I have put 10 on an old 7 install with the key off the case?

swapping out 1 piece of hardware should not trip activation, something else is going on.

There are constantly things being swapped out, those are just the ones that have triggered it.

For my crappy asus transformer all that it took was changing to a SSD and swapping the wifi card out for an AC one.

Gaming PC did it when I added ram and then swapped the gfx card from a 970 to a 960 and then back to the same 970.

I don't know how exactly, but it guessing it will store a hash/hashes of your hardware unique IDs (e.g. MAC address) and associate them with the license.

I've done the upgrade first, checked 10 was activate, performed the wipe and reload, and it activated itself fine from the internet after skipping product key entry during install.

Hi,

Before I upgrade from W7 to W10 I would like to backup my data, this is also recommended, I don't have an external HDD big enough for this. My C and D drives are one HDD partitioned as opposed to two physically separate HDD, if I backup to my D drive will my upgrade to W10 affect my data? Also what should I be backing up?
