A neighbour dropped off their Mac for me to have a look at because it won't update.  Its currently running OS X 10.10.5.   I don't know much about Macs, and a quick google left me even more confused. Hoping someone here can help please.  Is this machine past its use by date?  Is Linux the only way to have a current OS?

The latest version of macOS a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) can run is Big Sur (11.7). Big Sur was succeeded by Monterey (current version 12.6) in October 2021.  Monterey will be succeeded by Ventura (13) in October 2022.

Big Sur is still a very capable operating system and received security updates earlier this month.

Thanks.  I've downloaded the installer from the app store, and the installation is almost complete.

As I understand it, there are normally 3 supported releases.  Does this mean that this mac has one more year of support?

"Products are considered vintage when Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 5 and less than 7 years ago."

Quick review suggests it's just crept into vintage status for hardware. As per post above, its still software supported, but this is likely the last year of support there too.
