Hi everyone, has anyone come across this from Trademe, no access without installing another browser,, Opera not on their list of approved browser's, they want people to "upgrade" but I wouldn't consider these to be an "upgrade"

Sounds like it might be a malware prompt. Do you have screenshots?

What flavour and version of Opera browser are you using?

It's version 90.0, how to upload a screenshot, seems overly complicated, let's see it I can do it.

What a really hard way to just upload a simple file? Clicking on "upload" takes me to another page that just makes no sense? Website page needs a bit of work to make it simple, but hopefully that link will show the screenshot, cheers

That did not work. What OS are you on?

I can just do a ctrl+c (or right click -> copy) from snipping tool then ctrl+v (or right click -> paste) to upload and add image to a post.  Do you have javascript turned off or anything like that?

I've just tried Trade Me on an esoteric browser (Iris) and it comes up with an "isn't likely to work well on this browser" message (which is probably a lie since it's WebKit underneath), but there's a link to continue anyway. Does that link not show up for you?

With that said, they shouldn't be gatekeeping in the first place.

It's a reasonable thing for a site to advise users of certain browsers that the experience might be limited in some way due to that browser's features, regardless of the engine underneath.

e.g. if you're not a savvy person but you liked the sound of Brave's privacy features, you might install it and use it just fine most of the time, but not know that it will break things on some websites and that you should reduce or lower the shields depending on what sites are important to you and what experience you can tolerate.

I had that happen a day or so ago. Opera 91 on Android. No option to ignore and proceed anyway. Came from a link from email.

Switched to desktop compatibility mode, and it let me carry on fine.

Yes it lets me use the site in desktop mode, but a bit unusable on a small phone screen, is rather I had what I had before the "upgrade" which just worked!

You can try contacting TradeMe, they probably just need to "whitelist" the browser Agent.

Or try opera addon that spoof browser agent or browser fingerprint.

Not difficult or complicated at all. Copy the screenshot to your clipboard, paste it into the text field of your reply. Resize if desired by dragging corner handles.

Or you can use the 'upload this file' button. Not sure how effective you will be on a mobile device. Basically, it uploads the image to GZ in a new tab & you copy the URL of your choosing. Back to the original tab & paste the selected URL for the image.

Hope that helps.

Why not just use the app?

Because, for $reasons, when TM sends you an email of your saved searches, tapping on the picture of an auction opens in app, and tapping on the description opens in your default browser (or the other way around, I can't remember).

Then, just for fun - if you have opened in app, tapping the back button takes you back through previous trademe searches you have done in the app, tapping back while in browser takes you back to the email, so you can continue doom-scrolling.

I do actually prefer it opening in browser when looking at auctions from the emails.

That's frustrating and I understand why you'd have reasons not to use the app, but I was responding to op's use case given it's more generally browser access related than the UI/UX issues you've described.
