Global warming is here, whether you like it or not. Has anyone else been struck by the extreme recent weather patterns? Americans are dying in a heat wave while fires burn out of control in several states. It is also hot in Europe. Here at home I just read somewhere that our June was twice as wet as normal. The intense cloudbursts even drowned my car. In Japan unprecedented rainfall has already killed at least 38 people. Similar things seem to be happening in many places. As a non-expert, but interested observer, it seems to me like everything the boffins were predicting a few years ago is now actually happening. Can anyone with half a brain still seriously doubt that global warming is real? I would be genuinely interested to hear what the climate change doubters have to say about this. Just another normal variation in the grand scheme of things? Or is something fundamental happening?

Yeah, even Christchurch, 19 degrees early July, cannot remember that before.

Want a swim while in Dubai? 32.8 degrees C sea temperature yesterday. Parts of the Black Sea around 25 degrees C, & not even mid-July yet, maybe highest sea temps. around end of July?

It looks like there's still quite a strong La Nina active as evidenced by above average SST in most of the Pacific, lower than average SST in equatorial regions off South America.

Thanks, I had not seen that map before. From a quick read of the map it looks like a good year for a swim in the South of England!

From the spread of insect-borne disease to the risks to public health centers and outpatient facilities from environmental disasters, public health professionals on Capitol Hill told congressional staffers there is much work to be done to prepare for potential health risks to the American public at the federal, state and local levels.

'Climate change isn’t the singular cause of catastrophe, but it has widened the expanse of social vulnerability to disasters,'Hendricks outlined how the series of Western wildfires, intense rainfall in Houston, and wind and storm surge events in South Florida and Puerto Rico in 2017 were all devastating illustrations of the 'collision of climate-related risk and the human built environment.'

He and the other speakers stressed the need for advance investment in public health preparedness so that communities can prepare for risks ahead of time, whether that means developing evacuation plans or creating a way to monitor where diseases spread.

The panel discussion was the latest in a series of talks on public health and homeland security sponsored by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee. The aim of the panel was to outline ways the federal government could incorporate climate change in its disaster planning.
