"The new study, published in Environmental Research Letters, sets out the impact of different actions on a comparable basis. By far the biggest ultimate impact is having one fewer child, which the researchers calculated equated to a reduction of 58 tonnes of CO2 for each year of a parent’s life."

Don't see any of these virtue signalling nations canning their equivalent of WFF and paying people to have fewer children....

Sorry, missed your question. I'm guessing that the adult video biz in California might be nervous if Pence was President.

Global warming is here, whether you like it or not. Has anyone else been struck by the extreme recent weather patterns? Americans are dying in a heat wave while fires burn out of control in several states. It is also hot in Europe. Here at home I just read somewhere that our June was twice as wet as normal. The intense cloudbursts even drowned my car. In Japan unprecedented rainfall has already killed at least 38 people. Similar things seem to be happening in many places. As a non-expert, but interested observer, it seems to me like everything the boffins were predicting a few years ago is now actually happening. Can anyone with half a brain still seriously doubt that global warming is real? I would be genuinely interested to hear what the climate change doubters have to say about this. Just another normal variation in the grand scheme of things? Or is something fundamental happening?

Yeah, even Christchurch, 19 degrees early July, cannot remember that before.

Want a swim while in Dubai? 32.8 degrees C sea temperature yesterday. Parts of the Black Sea around 25 degrees C, & not even mid-July yet, maybe highest sea temps. around end of July?

They are more or less toast already due to competition from free material and developing countries with lower costs and less regulation.

Have you looked at this map?

https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/ocean/primary/waves/anim=off/overlay=sea_surface_temp_anomaly/orthographic=-156.23,0.52,417/loc=149.433,33.040

Current SSTA (Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly).

It looks like there's still quite a strong La Nina active as evidenced by above average SST in most of the Pacific, lower than average SST in equatorial regions off South America.

Thanks, I had not seen that map before. From a quick read of the map it looks like a good year for a swim in the South of England!

https://edition.cnn.com/2018/07/07/us/heat-wave-los-angeles-wxc/index.html

"(CNN)Thousands of Los Angeles residents were left without power Saturday morning after a heat wave prompted high electricity demand throughout the city."

"'Friday's record-setting heat led to unprecedented peak electricity demand,' according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). High demand caused power outages throughout city and left 34,500 customers in the dark -- without fans or air conditioning.

The department said that figure accounts for about 2.5% of their 1.5 million customers.

Scorching heat has descended upon California and parts of the southwest after a heat wave swept across Canada earlier in the week, killing dozens in the province of Quebec, according to Canadian health officials.

Many areas in California on Friday broke their daily high temperature records, according to CNN meteorologists. Downtown Los Angeles reached a high of 42 C degrees, breaking its previous daily record of 34 degrees, which was set in 1992.

University of California, Los Angeles also broke its previous daily temperature record, where thermometers read 43 degrees."

From the prestigious magazine Scientific American

U.S. Is Unprepared for the Health Challenges of Climate Change, Experts Warn

Insect-borne disease and damage to hospitals during disasters are among their concerns

"The United States isn’t ready for the public health problems climate change will bring, experts warned Congress last week.

From the spread of insect-borne disease to the risks to public health centers and outpatient facilities from environmental disasters, public health professionals on Capitol Hill told congressional staffers there is much work to be done to prepare for potential health risks to the American public at the federal, state and local levels.

'Climate change isn’t the singular cause of catastrophe, but it has widened the expanse of social vulnerability to disasters,'Hendricks outlined how the series of Western wildfires, intense rainfall in Houston, and wind and storm surge events in South Florida and Puerto Rico in 2017 were all devastating illustrations of the 'collision of climate-related risk and the human built environment.'

He and the other speakers stressed the need for advance investment in public health preparedness so that communities can prepare for risks ahead of time, whether that means developing evacuation plans or creating a way to monitor where diseases spread.

The panel discussion was the latest in a series of talks on public health and homeland security sponsored by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee. The aim of the panel was to outline ways the federal government could incorporate climate change in its disaster planning. The discussion followed calls from Thompson for the chairman of the committee, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), to have members conduct a site visit or field hearing in Puerto Rico to learn about the hurricane response and recovery efforts in the U.S. territory.

'Unfortunately, federal forecasters say there’s a 75 percent chance the upcoming hurricane season will produce between five and nine hurricanes, making the prospect of another catastrophe on the island very real,' Thompson said in a letter to McCaul on June 1.

The committee has not visited the island since Maria struck but did hold a field hearing in Texas in March. said Marccus Hendricks, an assistant professor in the urban studies and planning program at the University of Maryland."
