ezbee:Consumer NZ finds some New Zealand olive oils to not be 100% local
The olive oil market, at least in the US and Europe where there's data available, is slightly less legitimate than electronics on Aliexpress. A lot of generic olive oil is made up largely of pomace, the gunk of skins, stems, pits and leaves that's left over when virgin/extra virgin is extracted. Even stuff sold as virgin or extra virgin typically isn't, there was a survey done a few years ago of 31 brands of extra virgin olive oil from German supermarkets of which one single one was actually extra virgin, nine were virgin, and the rest were graded lampante, lamp oil unfit for human consumption.
One type of olive oil that I've found to be pretty good here is Tunisian-sourced, it's both helping out Tunisian farmers and not mangled and chemically manipulated like a lot of generic Italian oil is.
Bung: Even Italian brands often contain some Spanish olive oil.
Mass-market Italian brands typically use Turkish or Spanish olives, sent to Italy for processing whereupon the oil can be sold as genuine Italian olive oil.
You don't want to know what they do to those olives to get the maximum amount of oil out...

Sounds like Italian leather - if the leather is even financed by someone with an Italian name or someone who once ate pizza, it gets the stamp.

Wasn't there a big scandal several years ago where people died from Spanish 'olive' oil? I don't remember the details.

Lack of standardisation is another 'fun' one. My TV at home has a red light for off, and a green light for on. The TVs at work have a red light for on, and nothing for off.
We have two cars with 'sportsmatic' transmissions. One is push forward to change down, the other is push back. PITA

On the subject of Olive Oil. I find Neudorf very good. They are an independent Olive Mill near Nelson. Their Yuzu Olive oil is amazing on seafood. Quite hard to get hold of, but if you're ever in the area. Recently sold to new owners, and hopefully they start doing online sales.

I went to pick up Mum from the hospital today (it's nothing serious). They asked why I'm there, I told them, she gave me a sticker, and I proceeded in. I didn't actually look at the sticker until after I left.
"Covid-19 tested negative"
They didn't even ask the usual "do you have a sore throat?" stuff and I certainly wasn't tested!
Someone else from work went into the hospital over the weekend and she had a similar story. They did at least ask the "sore throat" questions but again, got a sticker saying she was negative without a test. Makes a bit of a mockery of it really!
Meanwhile my boss had a test this afternoon and she returned negative, which probably bodes well for the rest of us in the room :)

Consumer just did an article on extra virgin oils, as referenced indirectly by the OP. Their top-rated oil was Olivo Extra Virgin from Martinborough which I've just ordered a bottle of to see what it's like. The Tunisian-sourced Pam's that I like rated a silver medal, beating other oils costing twice as much (this isn't an uncommon result for things Consumer tests).

It just arrived, and it's the closest I've found in NZ to proper Italian olive oil. By "proper oil" I don't mean "assembled somewhere near Italy", I mean grown in the centuries-old grove behind someone's house with hand-labelled and numbered bottles. It's really good, and not outrageously priced when you get the larger bottles.
Compared to the last one I tried, from Olives on the Hill in Mangawhai, it's a bit sweeter, meaning the Mangawhai one tastes slightly bitter in comparison. Possibly just the olives, Ascolano for Mangawhai, Manzanillo/a for Olivo.

I can highly recommend River Estate too.
They must be using horse and cart for areas outside of Auckland. Overweek delivery.
