Could it be time on devices?

In a previous workplace there someone who was otherwise a regular bloke, until he got on some Evangelical twitter links from family.
Every few min the phone goes ping.

Then it was all about Jacinda making this or that legal that was total BS.
Some lazy rehashes of USA stuff where they changed names, Trumpy, Qanonish.
All that was missing was a report on the Domino's closest to the Beehive secretly being a ......
Added to going for every deep state conspiracy, and it was just tiring to hear all this logic of disaffection.

This is the real security worry about AI.
Simultaneously with commercial deployment to make you a fan of brand Y or Z, to manipulate you in social media.
Same tools are just as great, real person like bots, virtual influencers with perfect persuasive arguments aimed at your personality type.

Thats a key analyzing you and then either stop wasting time on you or going for your hot buttons with personalized messaging.
They are just wonderful for radicalizing people for other causes.
Automated ISIS, locating vulnerable, creating personalized radicalization, and then handling the asset.
The destruction of democracy and replacement with strong leaders for life.

In recent years something has definitely changed in the way that peoples' brains are functioning, and I'm not convinced by the default assumption that covid is solely responsible.

I have noticed that people seem to have less spatial awareness - i.e. not noticing when they are blocking someone's path or creating a nuisance in a crowded space. I have a theory that excessive time on iPhones is training our brains to focus on a narrow space straight ahead of us so that we don't naturally think beyond it.

If my theory is right then perhaps it could go as far as shutting down parts of the brain that drive critical thinking, hence why people are experiencing some really dumb thought processes when they spend a lot of time on social media.

I like your post, it's making me think. I've never owned an iPhone so possibly even critically.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

its a bit of both.

the tactics used have been used for centuries. you might know the old story about "politicians, salesmen and cult leaders all use the same methods". these days internet means its a lot easier to reach people.

also there is technically a huge amount of people with mental health issues. but most are mild things and they don't really go down the rabbit hole any worse than "normal" people. from what i've seen plenty of normal regular people have gone down that rabbit hole. most that i have seen have been typically anti-establishment, anti-big business, anti-govt, "don't tell me what to do" types. they will listen to their mates BS over anything official or scientific.

a lot of people simply do not understand how stuff works and simply rely on other people to tell them. pretty common to get customers who would ask the same question over and over hoping for a different answer. i get plenty people asking for help and they get really pissed off at you because you gave them a different answer to what they wanted to hear. ie they are not asking for help, they are asking for you to confirm what they already know and will simple go around asking everyone until someone talks BS and agrees with them.

i suspect its more about them being just sick of dealing with people. they are in their 3ft world, they retreat inward, up goes the defensive wall. its not just covid, its also all the other pressures as well. dealing with all the nasty people who are just out attacking strangers. eg article in stuff today (or was it hearld) about supermarket workers getting abused.

In dense population cities people tend to be aware only of what is directly in front of them, try not to crash into the next person, don't usually look very far ahead at all.

It could be a factor.

As a traveller in other cities I've sometimes found myself stopped and randomly staring at something interesting and slowly realise I'm creating a massive impediment to pedestrians or blocking an entrance etc. Back home I see travellers do it all the time. Holiday mode..

Yeah, I mean I think mobile devices cause us more than ever before to cut our attention into smaller pieces. Consuming YouTube shorts, which switch from subject to subject etc Tik Tok. I feel my ADHD tenancies are much worse.

Sigh...over the weekend I was told that a school in Hawera had kitty litter boxes in the girls toilets for those who thought they were cats.

I told the person that that was a long debunked conspiracy, and I was told they got it from a person on the school board so it must be true.
