Some are particularly bad, and for others you have to check how they've applied it. For example for the Cabots that we used you have to totally ignore their recoat instructions, put on thinnish coats (not with the recommended lamb's wool applicator), and leave several days, preferably a week, to dry between coats. If you follow the Cabots instructions you get a tacky, never-drying surface. OTOH if you fastidiously ignore them you get OK results, except that their neutral oil is actually more like kwila so after several coats you've got a deck that Trump could use for camouflage. This is why we went with composite decking during the rebuild, all that ever needs is an occasional wipe-down.

We need to replace the timber on our decks. What brand/type of decking did you get and how did it compare with timber? How is it fixed and is it easily fixed onto existing bearers?

We went with Outdure ResortDeck, it looks about as non-plasticky as you can get from a synthetic and it's hollow-core so not as heavy as some composites. If you're in Orkland I've still got the material samples, you could come and grab them to check which colour and style you prefer, PM me for details. If you're just replacing existing decking timber then it's pretty easy to do, they have hidden SS clips, included when you order it, that you screw into the bearers and clip into place. The sole caveat is that since it's a dense composite it's a bit more of a pain to cut than the usual treated pine, but apart from that it's pretty easy to work with.

I have something similar in silver-greyish. But beware of darker colors - they become quite hot in direct sunlight and you don‘t want to walk with bare feet on the deck.

And reading customer reviews for decking oils. There's millions of decking oils and all the reviews vary between best thing since sliced bread and utter crap. Might as well print out a list and throw darts at it.

Every time I spot something promising I find something I don't like about it, like previous reviews (as mentioned), or the colour, or just no stock. Anyone know anything about Tung Oil ? Some say they've got it, implying thats a good thing, but should I care ?

you will always find good and bad reviews about almost any product out there some you have to take with a grain of salt others do appear a bit more reliable, but that's for you to decide.

and there are many things that can affect how the product ends up looking, ir not following the instructions or its too wet or insert reason here. its just one of those things.

I just spent several minutes working through a web form. At the bottom is a tickbox for "I wish to create an account". I'm unlikely to visit the site again so I didn't tick it. I clicked Submit and got an error that I hadn't ticked the box!

I begrudgingly ticked it and clicked Submit again, then got an error that the captcha (which was still showing success) had timed out and that I should reload the page. That wiped out all the text I'd entered.

It's a furniture oil, an alternative to boiled linseed oil but since tung is an ancient Chinese invention it has to be better because it's ancient, and Chinese. I wouldn't put it on a deck even if what you're being sold is tung oil and not very-similar-to-the-effect-of-tung-oil, or oil from Tung's Paint Emporium, there's better and far cheaper synthetics you can use.

I'm so over the whole "Sorry we are being affected by Covid" trope.

We've had two years to get used to this stuff...we used to get affected by Flu. seasonal sickness and other maladies. We didn't get constant excuses for poor service then. Just an apology.

Poorly-written specifications. I am so tempted to implement exactly what the spec asks for... but then I'll be the one that has to change it all later.
