I think its really sad NZ is giving up the once in a generation option to modernize the flag :(

There's no law stopping another referendum later this year or any other time so give it a rest with the once in a lifetime nonsense.

Come up with a better design and I'll be in.

I keep hearing that it is a "once in a hundred years" opportunity - maybe because the current flag has lasted that long. Some people expect the new design to last that long if it is selected. I doubt that our attempt at relevance will have anywhere near that longevity now that relevance and expedience are the precedent.

Yepp, accept i am not contributing anything earth shattering to the debate, which is going round in circles now.

Let's get the results.

[On the other hand, Nigel Latta does raise a good point that ignoring the money already wasted on the referendum, the costs to change the flag to a new one will probably still be significant... Money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Like everytime a govt department changes its logo or name...

seriously? you want the flag change once in every generation.

this i find goes along with trendy off the cuff comments made like richies. and I wonder if this line of thought comes from the newest generation.

i simply cant vote for a flag that looks rubbish as a flag firstly (if they had actually used some designers maybe i might feel differently);

and secondly im fine with our current flag, we have sung our national anthem with it, one gold medals with it, one the rugby world cup with etc.

Perhaps the intent is to get a flag that represents the majority people rather than a flag that is different just for the sake of it.

i agree on not changing just for the sake of it (which is what this has felt like, hence why im skeptical around its timing and TPPA).

but i think it would be a bad idea to try and create a flag that represents the people, as you are going to offend someone no matter what you design given our multicultural society, but i have no problem designing a flag that represents the country, and has no cultural or ancestory input of specific people (which is the problem people have with the union jack). a flag that represents the country would be great. but i think all of them put forward failed that brief. IMO

A country is just some rocks. A nation is a people with history.

Picky. Country is primarily a synonym for nation or state and that is how it is commonly used. The other main meaning is the land of that nation or state.

These are my thoughts (and final words) on the flag issue:

1. I've spoken to many people who like the Kyle Lockwood black + blue design, and will vote for it because they want it to be our new flag.
2. I've also spoken to some who don't actually like the Lockwood design that much but are voting for it just because they want to change the current flag.
3. I want to change the flag, but I don't like the Lockwood design so am voting to keep the old one.
4. If the Lockwood design wins the second referendum I'll be disappointed, but I'll accept it - I won't cry or get angry or continue to fly the old flag in protest.

That pretty much sums up my feelings too.

I do have a thought around the whole "once in a generation" argument though.

It has been stated that it would take a brave politician to attempt the flag change process again, if this referendum fails to secure a new one. But we can't be far off having the discussion as a nation about becoming a republic (at least I hope I get to see us change to one in my lifetime). And if this does happen, it seems natural to me that we'd want a new flag to herald this change in our nation's status.

whats wrong with a simple thee colour stripe flag like irelands or frances or germanys etc.

white on top to represent land of the long white cloud.

green in the middle to represent what we "tell ourselves" is a green country, or at least represents the forest. possibly with a frond or fern motif in the middle stripe in another shade of green.

and black to identify the ground and the colours we mostly wear to represent our country.

im not suggesting the above seriously im just saying why cant we just have a simple flag that represents our country.

Because all the good simple geometrical designs have already been taken ?

Personally I liked the red peak design best.

the one i just mentioned isnt taken, there are a zillion combinations left. under design principles for flags.

im not even going to comment on the red peaks one.

all that really can be said is, if you want to change  a flag, hire a flag designer to give the people some choice.

Exactly. Infact that is what the red peak design was more about. Something really simple that looked balanced and unique.  There were some more simple striped ones submitted, but were ignored. I really like the UN flag, which is like a bar code, and was professionally designed without a committee. Designing by committee, you end up with a Don-Key. A white skeleton shape is not a silver fern, with weird out of context red and white stars just doesn't fly with me.

I don;t think people should be given a choice. I think the design should be designed and selected by professionals who speicalise in design. The fact is that many NZers have poor taste, as can be evidenced by going into many peoples homes. So can those people be trusted to choose the best flag design? I mean you don't design a building by getting the country to come up with a design.
