bazzer:

I'm working on making a wallet out of kombucha scoby.

Be careful with that stuff. Years ago I built a German Shepherd out of kombucha scoby as a school project (you could get them in kitset form back then), but within a few days all the nails had fallen out and all that was left was a strange-looking splat outside the kennel.

I'll just leave this here... (no, the comics on either 'side' of this one do not provide any further context!)

Personally, I'm annoyed at the growing number of robot narrators on YT. I presume the creator is using text to speech of some kind. I just avoid their videos now.

They can be quite handy.  for example I follow a carpenter that appears to be in Japan.  His voice overs are translated into English then read by a robot voice.

My personal favourite is the miracle cure guy.  Sure, there is a 20minute cure for hypertension.  Of course there is.

The hassle of hiring a rental car these days ...  Our company uses Avis and I have to sign about half a dozen times.  Meanwhile one signature per person is sufficient to buy a house, take a mortgage or end a marriage.

Missing a call, receiving a v/mail and not knowing until several days later when someone else leaves a message.

So frustrating!! The notification of a missed call isn't there at all - simply a rogue v/mail that had no notification at all!!

Rented an avis awd for skiing this week, got to Wanaka to discover they had forgotten to put the chains in boot...

Queue 3hrs driving to Queenstown and $40 fuel to pick them up (luckily as next two days needed them)

Now should I yell and scream when I return the car this weekend or smile and nod and avoid explaining how pissed off I am....

That crime is perceived to have increased, as some seem to believe after the quarantine periods that the legal system is no longer valid for them, or even worse, that they want to adapt the local one to the one they are used to in their countries of origin. Who would have thought that?

I am invited and about to go to police headquarters to make a statement as a witness to a night-time assault with injury, serious damage to property (car) and robbery by a female person on a female victim.

My company uses Avis too, but has us enrolled to the Avis Preferred program. I normally only have to sign the vehicle condition report and off I go.

We use Hertz - I got a car off them last week (asked for a mid-sized SUV, got an Outlander which is too big for small hotel carparks, but that's another gripe). Just a signature on a tablet and everything including the pre-hire condition report was sent to my phone. Easy.

AML legislation.

We move house. So we have to prove to our accountants of 15 years that we did not suddenly become criminals. Ridiculous. Just another level of petty irritation.

Just been through a similar experience. Once upon a time you were innocent until proven guilty now you're effective guilty until you prove your innocence. It's bloody maddening and frustrating getting all the proof of identity stuff annotated.

These days it's getting harder and harder to find documents with your current address as very little is sent by snail mail, most accounts are emailed. Things like rates bill only arrive every three or so months and some proof of address requirements have to be more recent than 3 months.

A lot of the AML stuff is driven by the US. I don't know whether the paperwork requirements also come from there, but given that the US is at least 30 years behind the rest of the world in terms of automating things like this (for example the Covid stimulus payments involved physically mailing bits of paper called 'checks' to people), it could be that this is a US requirement being imposed on a world that doesn't work like the US does.
