Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
MikeB4: @Technofreak I am the manager and I encourage it. I want a refreshed happy work force. I also encourage drink breaks throughout the day. This 2022 not Victorian England.
Having regular drink or work breaks throughout the day is necessary for the good of the workforce and productivity but having a break BEFORE you've done any work, really? That is a bit over the top IMO.

A coffee and catch up before the day begins is great for esprit de corps.

Getting annoyed about it is over the top IMO but it's your annoyance.
I find incompetent people who are always at their desk far more annoying than people get the job done and who go for a coffee.

We both obviously have very different working conditions.
When your start time is predicated around an event happening X minutes after commencing work with only sufficient time for you to do the preparatory work beforehand and people want to start with a coffee then perhaps you'll understand what I'm getting at. I'm not talking about a desk job where you can pop away for a coffee anytime you like.

If the job isn't getting done on time that's something different. The problem isn't someone having a coffee, it's them not getting their job done on time.
The way you presented it wasn't focussed on work performance.

I get the impression you'll argue black is white. The problem is very much someone having coffee which is stopping them getting the job done in time. Having a coffee and getting the job done are mutually exclusive in this case.
I fail to see how it wasn't presented as focussing on work performance. If it didn't affect work performance there's really nothing to be annoyed about. I rather suspect some on here, you included, jumped to a conclusion based on your work environment and didn't stop to think there might be situations where starting off with a coffee isn’t appropriate.

To remind you your original post complained about someone having a coffee when they first got to work. That was it.
Your follow up post was mostly being flabbergasted that about other people didn't find that inappropriate.
People posting a complaint without context then getting upset when other people have a differing view because they imposed their own context on the scenario due to none being provided.
Remember, no-one else knows what your thought process is (probably a good thing in a lot of cases ;-) ) that lead to the statement was, no matter how much it makes sense in your own head.
Technofreak:
If people cannot arrive at work ready to start work at the assigned start time they really need to think about their priorities in life. If you really need to have a coffee, arrive early and have it before start time. Don't expect your fellow workmates to carry you while you have your coffee.
I'm flabbergasted that so many people on here think it's OK to waste the bosses time at the start of the day. Not all jobs are sitting in front of a computer where you may have to wait for it to "wake up" at the start of the day.
If you think that work should be the highest priority in everyone's life, you really need to think about priorities in your life.
Whilst it's important for all people on a shift in a factory or assembly line to start work at the same time, that's not the case for many jobs today. And, whilst manual jobs require a person to be at their workstation to do work, that's not the case for "thinking" jobs. People can be doing their job *while* they have their coffee. And, assuming that work is thinking and thinking requires coffee, then preparing for thinking is surely something the employer can contribute to. Forward-thinking companies like Google have recognized this for a long time.
Given the amount of time wasted in meetings and administrivia, I think there's bigger priorities than coffee. Let people have a little joy in their work lives. I'm glad I don't work for you.

When a Supplier you "regularly" use changes Courier Company without any mention on their site, from one where you knew (approx.) when it would arrive (CourierPost) to one that you don't really know (Aramex) without any warning etc!
Aramex must be far cheaper!!!
