Watched Danny Boyle's latest film, Trance.

Not bad, good acting, some genuine suspense (unlike 99% of modern films) and twists.

The Lincoln Lawyer. I wasn't sure about this one, but it's better than I thought. Give it 7/10 for the good story.

The Road - 8.5/10

This is an excellent movie - top quality! However...

... it is also possibly the most grim, depressing, and heart-rending film I have ever seen. Possibly the only thing worse would be watching 2 hours of kittens being drowned. Don't get me wrong - it's a great film - engrossing story, well acted, great visuals. It's just so...grim! If you decide to watch it, make sure you're at a peak of happiness and ecstasy - anything less, and you'll probably find yourself in a pit of despair by the time the credits roll.

For those who haven't heard of it, it's based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, and it's about a Man (played by Viggo Mortensen) and his Son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who are travelling south to the coast, in a post-apocalyptic world. The film doesn't go into depth about the causes of the apocalypse, and there's no central "villain." Instead, it's a harrowing look into the psyche of survival. My wife has read the book, and she said the film was reasonably faithful to the source material, though the book did a better job of conveying the sense of hope underlying the story, though oddly it was also much more grim.

For me, it falls into the special category of films (like Black Swan) that, having now seen it, I can happily never watch it again. To borrow Joey's approach (from Friends), I'm now going to place the film in a metaphorical freezer, and lock the door so it can never be opened again.

P.S. After we finished watching the film, we had to put something funny on to watch before going to bed. We settled for yet another viewing of Bill Bailey's "Part Troll" stand-up show. Brilliant! I'd recommend this approach to anyone who chooses to watch The Road - have a funny, happy film/show to watch immediately afterwards, to innoculate yourself against the potential for catatonic depressive states...

Premium Rush - 6/10

I'm increasingly finding myself a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's films, so I was happy to watch Premium Rush, even though it appeared to bypass a general NZ release and go straight to DVD. However, this wasn't one of his better films. The story was okay, but barely qualified for a full-length movie; the visuals were pretty good, and the acting was passable. It was fun to see General Zod (Michael Shannon) before his turn in Man of Steel (still haven't seen that yet), as an increasingly desperate bent cop.

Puss in Boots - 6.5/10

Another film from my "catching-up" section. Puss was a scene-stealer in the Shrek films, and when this came out the trailers made it look like a neat little film. It was okay, but it wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped. One week later, and I'm struggling to remember anything particularly noteworthy about it (pretty much says it all). It might be fun for kids, but it lacked the zing that a lot of modern animated films have, with a main storyline for kids and some in-jokes for the adults.

Pacific Rim 3D. 6/10. As this was formated in 1.85 : 1 it would have been good in Imax as it would have fitted the screen better than Star Trek which was "ZoomoVisioned" to fit the Imax screen format but we went to see it at St Lukes VMax in Auckland. Interesting thing was no ads or promos just straight into the movie..

Just watched Despicable Me 2.
A great day out at the movies with the family.
Entertaining as expected.
Great characters. Minions were hilarious as usual.

Real Steel - 7.5/10

This was surprisingly enjoyable. I had some reservations - Hugh Jackman in a film about roboto boxing - but underneath it was a pretty standard, if well assembled (pun intended) heart-warming tale about father-son bonding.

The plot, for lack of a better word, involves Hugh Jackman as a former boxer who operates robot boxers in a near-future world where human boxing has been replaced by the robotic kind. His character is a commitment-phobe perennial welcher with daddy-issues of his own, confonted with his own 11-year old son who's mother has just died. In a scam to make some money, he agrees to look after his son for the summer but inevitably ends up "learning" and becomes closer to his estranged offspring.

What I liked about the film was that, for all it's Disney tropes about familial bonding, it didn't feel too cloying at any stage. The kid avoided being too brattish, precocious, or sickly sweet (no "yippee's", here). There's nothing particularly new or original about anything in the film, though the robots seemed to integrate nicely with the live action without looking too out-of-place. Most of the film is predictable (cocky main character gets taken down a peg or too, before learning to go back to his roots to find his true self), but I appreciated that the ending didn't go for the obvious result, and instead went for a more realistic outcome (can't say anything more without "spoilers.") I did wonder about the "realism" of robots boxing though - would a machine get "tired" or stagger around the ring when hit? Maybe, but it felt a little like they were trying to hard to associate robot and human boxing...

On a vaguely related note (big robots bashing things), can anyone explain for me the fascination with Pacific Rim? I'm a fan of big action as much as the next guy, but I can't summon up any enthusiasm for Pacific Rim - big robots/mechs, fighting big monsters. The sheer spectacle factor doesn't seem to justify it for me, in a world of near-limitless CGI (a big robot is no different from a small robot - just hit the "magnify" button), and the story seems a little flat, there simply to justify the set pieces. However, I'd hate to miss out on a great film (as I did with Iron Man), so if anyone can point out the clinching argument for Pacific Rim, I'd love to hear it.

The Heat 8/10
If you liked Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy plays a similar role, Sandra Bullock plays Sandra Bullock. Think Bridesmaids meets Miss Congeniality.
Its swearier than you'd expect for a Sandra Bullock film, hence the R13 sticker, but nothing sexual.
It is very funny - took the wife along last night and she loved every minute - even the emergency tracheotomy.
It takes just about every odd-couple cop movie cliche and ramps them up to 11. Pimps, drug-dealers, albinos and more!
Not a big screen must-see, wouldn't lose much impact by waiting for the smaller screen.

It has to be one of the stoopidest movies I've ever seen. It's probably ok if you're about 12 or so.

I saw it last night and thought it was ok. The acting and interaction between the humans was naff, but the action was awesome, the scale was well portrayed and tbe basic story didn't suck as badly as any of the transformer movies.
