Also watched Pacific Rim last night, it was a fun, turn your brain off kind of film. Very predictable and not really up to Guillermo's usual standards. 6.5/10

A Thousand Words - Awesome Concept, pretty poorly executed, but a number of very funny LOL moments. 7/10 I guess.

I watched the 'Good Day to Die Hard' movie on bluray last night.
I'd been told it was bad, and it was bad. Surprisingly bad actually.

I think mainly it was lacking any heart/soul that the other ones had. The character relationship was boring, I didn't feel moved. Now I know it's Die Hard, but seriously some of the early ones had some emotional content, like John McClane running around screaming Holly!....

I've been doing a bit of video work lately and have quite an interest in 'Colour Grading'. The Epic look these days is green/blue (guy speak) shadows and orange skin tones. Every Geekzoner contributing to this movie thread should have a quick read over this: http://theabyssgazes.blogspot.co.nz/2010/03/teal-and-orange-hollywood-please-stop.html

Once you're aware of it you'll start seeing it everywhere though, sorry about that. Some of it is so <insert swear word> over the top it's crazy. Like I honestly feel like they're taking the pss with some of it. Transformers and Day to Die Hard were full of it. Some scenes were like two colours only, orange oompa loompas and Aqua/Teal (ladies speak) shadows.

I saw it last night and thought it was ok. The acting and interaction between the humans was naff, but the action was awesome, the scale was well portrayed and tbe basic story didn't suck as badly as any of the transformer movies.

I agree about the Transformer movies. I thought that the first was pretty decent, but 2 & 3 have made me decide to never watch another Michael Bay movie again.

I really enjoyed Pacific Rim. As far as Kaiju movies go it's right on the money. They way they set up the whole world in the first 10-15 minutes and gave reality to the kaiju attacks was really inspired.

I wasn't a fan of some of the Jaeger's purely because their pilots weren't developed into anything more than a racial stereotype. I also couldn't stand the "Australian" father and son....why couldn't they have cast two actual AUSTRALIANS?! I was so put off by their fake accents that it really ruined any scene they were in.

However, as far as action goes - this film is incredible! Those fights are so well choreographed and the way they were shot was great because those creatures are gigantic, so any action would usually appear slow and meandering to our eyes. But it was shot in such a way that you could tell they weren't moving fast - but even still the impact of punches etc had great speed to them.

I mean I'll sign on to any movie where the protagonist uses a giant cargo ship as a baseball bat!!

I'm babbling now. Great action film, smart premise and plot development but some shady characters that could be better done.

Partially watched Killing them softly on a plane on the way to Sydney. Stopped 45 minutes before the end because it was that bad, so I give it 4/10.

Watched Olympus has Fallen which for an action movie wasn't that bad, and I rate it 6/10.

and watched Skyfall for a second time, on the plane when flying back. Always good to watch a good movie a second time, to pick up small things you might have missed.

Saw The Act of Killing at the NZIFF. My view is biased since the events documented in this movie affected my family, being Chinese and in Medan at the time this all happened. It was before my time though. Super intense and a bit of a mind f*ck for me. Joshua Oppenheimer did a superb job, especially in keeping silent most of the time. He interjected with some very timely pertinent provoking questions in the rare occasions... in flawless Indonesian no less! Not an easy viewing but worth the effort.

9.5/10

Android user, software developer, a semi-typical (not a gamer) geek, and a Bernese Mountain Dog nut!

Watched "Only God Forgives" yesterday. Certainly not a movie for everyone but I thought it was ok. 6 outta. 10.

The acting was good but if you see this thinking it'll be like the last movie these two paired up on (Ryan Gosling the director) then you'll probably find it hard to watch.

Again like Gosling in Drive he's playing another quiet character and the movie is closer to speechless than one with a normal amount of dialogue. The sound is well done.

There's a fair bit of violence but probably half is more perceived than actual on screen usually this is followed by a after shot of the end result.

So don't believe the hype and watch with a open mind and you'll either think it was a good movie or just not watch to the end.

Went to see the 4k digital restoration of Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" as part of the NZIFF at the Embassy yesterday. What a great movie. Sort of a cross between a a spy thriller and an early 007 movie.

Apart from some of the acting sounding a little "formal", as I guess was the style back then, it was a thoroughly engrossing movie.
