Windows again. I left it running a long process overnight, then this morning it's sitting at a blank desktop and the system uptime shows that it's rebooted. The event log implies that someone pressed the power button, but I'm the only one here and I was asleep at the time. It might be the first sign of a defective switch, but I suspect it's more likely to be Windows being Windows...

neb: That was Epstein, not Andrew. Andrew was an arse, but he wasn't Epstein.

Andrew was an enabler and at least beneficiary if not customer of Epstein & Maxwell. He did have sex with Virginia Roberts (age 17 when he was 41) which would be illegal if she was paid for it.

I think that, even it wasn't being an Epstein, goes well beyond being an arse.

floydbloke:

Replacing the dipped beam bulbs on my VF Commodore.

Particularly the driver's side which involves jacking up the car, removing the front wheel, unscrewing the wheelguard lining and squeezing my hand through various gaps and cavities (OK size  for a 5-year old's hand but not for a grown man) to unplug and unclip the old one, then re-clipping and re-plugging the replacement, all unsighted.  Then re-assembling.

Passenger side was bliss in comparison.  It 'only' involves removing the airfilter box and you can access through the top. Still  as tight and dark as a duck's backside though.

My Volvo XC70 was like this in reverse - the passenger side was the difficult one. Driver's side was a breeze and only cost me for a bulb. Passenger side required dropping the car at an auto-electrician for a day so he could strip various parts of the engine away to get to the inner workings of the headlight, change the bulb and then replace all said bits.

$20 vs $100. And for some reason (probably because they were on permanently) I went through a few bulbs over the years.

This falls under the obsolescence of hardware but is still quite the grinder.

iPads are fantastic devices. The batteries outlast the life of the device. They’re rugged enough. Some, depending on how far back you go, even have 1080p or higher resolution screens.

My grinder for today is locating suitable replacement key-folios for them. So you google for the A-model of the still going strong iPad and google suggests a model on the Logitech website. Then when you open said site the suggested product doesn’t suit.

Rince-repeat for Noel Leeming/PBtech

Amazon is about the only place you'll get them. Annoying.

This reminds me of my days driving in France. In France it is a legal requirement to carry a set of replacement bulbs in the car with you at all times so that a blown bulb could be replaced roadside. Don't have them and its a fairly hefty fine.

However that didn't stop the manufacturers from producing cars where it was impossible to replace a bulb roadside. The Peugeot 3008 that I had as a hire car once had 4 pages in the owner's manual dedicated to replacing the driver's side low beams. It involved removing the front bumper, hot side intercooler piping, taking tension off the alternator belt and relocating it our of the way and even showed a picture of the car on a hoist.

On my Jazz you have to take of the front bumper and remove the lights to replace the bulbs, it sucks and makes a 5 minute job a 30-40 minute job

$14 for a small serving of wedges at Cardrona Ski Field. Delicious, but I have been robbed in daylight, and felt less violated!

Last nights AIRNZ flight was delayed because as the captain mentioned, they found something 'unexpected' on the wing! Engineering came and had a look at it, and they 'think' it should be OK.

THINK!? Is that engineer going to be boarding this flight if he just 'thinks' it's OK?!

We got here safely!

Years ago, in a small plane, which I think had four propellors:

Propellor 1: Starts up fine
2: Starts up fine
3: Starts up fine
4: Slow whir. Stop. Starts slowly again. Stops again. Starts up. Slows down.

Meanwhile the stewardess is just standing there, watching it, with her "customer services smile" on her face.

The flight was fine once they got the thing started.

I've been on an Air New Zealand flight which sat on the apron for three hours, with engineers even boarding and strolling up and down the aisles, before finally they closed the door and the captain informed us that they had an issue with one of the brakes, so they disconnected it.

Now I know that planes have a lot of failsafes, but at first hearing that sounds pretty darn scary.

Was catching a flight from Hokitika once.

A thunderstorm was arriving and it was raining very heavily.

Dad asked the pilot if he was going to wait?

Pilot said "You don't expect me to stay around in this!"

Reminds me of the time  i was on a Continental flight waiting to take off at New York when it was announced there would be 1-2 hour delay as they needed to replace the brakes and all i could think was  i hope they know what they are doing because the first time they would be tested to the limit would be when we landed at LA and it would be bit late if they found they didnt work.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

(The URL is misleading it was actually "only" 8.5 hours).

As a person who *hates* flying despite having caught hundreds and hundreds of flights in my lifetime, that would probably be me Karening out and insisting on deplaning :)
