We needed a plumber last week and I called a local tradie rather than the one from the next town who we used for two emergencies over the Covid lockdowns.

I always want to user locals and given how many there are around here I assumed their rates would be roughly the same, but I would at least save the "out of town" fee.

I received the invoice yesterday which shows their "time on site" is twice as long as what my cameras tell me and their rates are $290 an hour compared to $85.

My mistake for not asking first. When I questioned it they said it includes health and safety compliance. I asked if that was the guy leaning against the house for 20 minutes looking at his phone whilst the other bloke did all the work. No reply.

Oh well, lesson learned.

The rubbish tip that masquerades as our main highways.

Not just here, did 2018 trip around UK, Ireland & Europe - Paris roads were definitely in the tip category.

I was driving into Westgate yesterday behind a small truck that transports tires. The driver was having some sort of takeaways for breakfast and as he finished each thing, he just tossed whatever was left out of his window. I saw napkins, a drink carton, and some sort of sauce pottle all go sailing out over the course of about a minute.

MadEngineer: Case in point of one of the kids from the house across the road disposing of an empty cardboard box at the end of our driveway

What did their parents have to say?

I can tell they're the kind of parents that literally don't care.  I've knocked on their wide open front door before with no answer.  Just easier to pick it up and biff it in the recycling and be done with it.  It'll be a different story however if they keep up the tormenting of our dog...

Speaking of dogs :)

We have new neighbours, they seemed nice enough when we went over to say hello but after two weeks an old dog turned up and it barks at absolutely everything. Not once or twice but for minutes on end.

Someone walks past their house, the postie arrives, a courier comes to the neighbour behind them, or comes to us next to them, when the bloke gets in his diesel van at 6am and leaves it idling for 10 minutes, when she goes out at 11pm to stand outside for whatever reason or if she has a visitor as she's WFH.

Today it kicked off and didn't stop for ten minutes. She just comes out laughs at it "oh you silly thing" she says as it looks like it's going to rip to pieces whoever was at their gate.

We asked her about it the last time she came over "oh he's harmless, he wouldn't hurt a fly, he's just shy, you don't have to worry about him".

Dog barking really annoys me. People buy a dog, leave them home alone all day .  Even if the dog doesn't bark and whine all day, the dog is not happy.  It is cruel.  Our neighbour just euthanised their dog because they couldn't control the barking --- but, only after 5 years of constant barking.

People who aren't prepared to put their dogs in daycare facilities or have someone at home are really selfish!

As for leaving the diesel Van idling for 10 minutes, that's also unbelievably rude. Sounds like you have crappy new neighbours!

When you've owned the house for 15 years and only just now find that some cowboy swapped the neutral and earth on one of the power points.

Last night I connected a new diesel/mains/air/water heater in our motorhome to an unused for the last 12 years mains double wall socket originally installed to power the removed from new microwave oven. The 1000/2000W heater element fired up but died overnight.

A quick check this morning revealed that a similar cowboy had never heared of wire stripping and just a semi-tight terminal screw down against the insulation for the three wires would suffice. At least they were in the correct holes.

I'd use that on the neighbours occasionally.

Ugh. You have my sympathy. I'd rather loud music/party/lawn mower as at least you know it will end.

Waste management cant for the life of them replace my wheely bin which has a split down the side of it, despite me having called about 6 times, and them saying it will be collected the following day 3 times, and it will be collected on a Tuesday as thats when the driver is in the area. Its been almost 4 weeks since the initial call.

We had waste management 'forget' to collect the rubbish bins in my whole street.

The next day, I called them and told them they missed our entire street and everyone's bins were still out... they asked for my address, and later on a truck came and emptied our bin....but, only our bin, they ignored all the other full bins.

I found a shoe on my driveway a fortnight ago. It almost certainly belongs to one of the kids up the back as they're always running around the place so I put it on the connecting fence and it's still there a fortnight later.

It's Halloween soon. Do they sell laxative chocolate in NZ? 😇

The council proposed some yellow no-parking lines up my street and there was a lot of feedback and debate. Eventually they sent out a letter saying they were going to put fewer lines down and included a map of where they were going to go.

Last night, after dark, they sneaked out and painted lines in the original (long) area.
