Doesn't that make the renter an employee under New Zealand law? Isn't Gloriavale running up against something of the same? Whatever, the landlord sure has a lot of cheek.

Ads for the storage units variously refer to 24/7 custodians or managers available to assist tenants. In 2014 it was famous for being torched with about $4M in damages.

Wellington rental wants paying tenant to work as security guard - NZ Herald

The property was posted to Trade Me yesterday and asked tenants to pay $475 per week in rent for a one-bedroom flat above Kiwi Self Storage in Kilbirnie.

Any tenant would need to agree to walk the property every night and check everything was in order, and then attend any overnight security callouts and “take the necessary course of action”.

They would also need to attend weekly meetings with the manager of the storage units and debrief on any issues.

If it was all getting a bit too much responsibility the landlord had already factored in holiday time - any tenant would get 4 weeks of holiday over the year (not accumulative) and up to (but not exceeding) two nights away a month (also not accumulative).

Also - if the person did want to go away, they would, of course, have to organise security for the storage units.

No actual mention of weekends, so presumably they're expected to be working 3 weekends a month.

Looking at https://www.myrent.co.nz/rentals/kilbirnie-wellington/page/4 for a one-bedroom flat in Kilbirnie, $475 a week would be about right without being an unpaid security guard. But maybe it's a really salubrious flat above a storage yard? 😂

Security guard torched it cos they wanted the weekend away?

What's wrong with these people?

Part of Senate Bill 41, introduced by State Senator Danny Britt Jr., is now in effect in North Carolina. The part of the law now in effect allows concealed carry permit holders to bring firearms to places of worship that also have schools.

In the same session in North Carolina:

News6: Senate Bill 189: “An act to increase the fine imposed on persons convicted of trafficking in heroin, fentanyl, or carfentanil” will increase the fines for people convicted of drug trafficking who have between 4-14 grams of the substance on them. The fine increase is from $50,000 to $500,000.

Good for increasing state revenues from drug sales in some cases. Good for permanent debt and continuous arrest warrants for non-payment after release in other cases. Almost totally useless if you actually want to reduce drug selling and drug use I would have thought. Even stranger, North Carolina state already has criminal asset forfeiture laws that require the proceeds fund education. Oh. Maybe there's a problem?

I just learned there's an internet top level domain .unicorn

.TK is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Tokelau, a territory of New Zealand. And for a while it was one of the most popular domain names in the world.

You'll never guess the most popular internet country code

An aircraft / drone or whatever with ICAO code of C826AF has regularly been doing circuits and doughnuts near Lake Ellesmere (Christchurch) at about 5000ft!

According to CAA - It doesn't exist!

Top Secret trial aircraft?

I wonder if this press release explains it... I am waiting for confirmation if this is the same aircraft.

Very much baby steps. It will a very long time before pilots are removed from the cockpit. The complexities of removing pilots from the flight deck go way beyond controlling and navigating an IFR aircraft remotely. As for these aircraft being electric, that's another quantum step of unreality.

It will be much less complicated to remove Air Traffic Controllers from the control towers and radar centres,  until it is possible to achieve that I don't see unmanned civil aircraft operating in the IFR environment carrying fare paying passengers being a thing.

There are lots of interesting TLDs now - .meme is a new one

Yeah, I have a whole list of them that are permanently blocked by my email and firewalled for web access. They are mostly used by spammers/scammers

Semi-related, I was just reading a couple of days ago about a guy - let's call him John - who worked for the UK's top-level domain administrator. The number of email validators that would reject his email address - john@uk - was apparently staggering!

Edit: And now Geekzone has decided that I'm trying to "ping" a member here...

Yeah, saw that before. Just rewrote the regex to prevent that, so will deploy soon.

I'd like my email address to be initials@xxx.nz please :) The extra 3 letters to my actual first name is exhausting :)
