Geektastic: My wife messing with my tea.

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Do you also have trouble with peas under your mattress?

Yes. Asperger’s. Same reason my food or drink must always be the cup or plate on the right when served, why I use an electronic timer to time my tea brewing for exactly 4 minutes, why I have to touch the gate at each end of the drive when I take the dogs out etc etc.

It’s odd to most but important to me.

That's all that matters. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

Nine days later, no further updates. Have they sent it via Greenland or something?

Lost the original post so I can't check who the carrier was but if it's not Yanwen or Sunyou then it should probably turn up in the next week or two. If it's Yanwen or Sunyou you've got a wait of 60-90 days (sorry).

USPS. So long as it turns up by 8 Dec as it's the last piece of my outfit for our end-of-year party!

Ah, you should be reasonably safe there, eventually it'll exit the black hole.

The ever-escalating repairs on our house. More delays while they work out how to tackle the next bit...meanwhile we are in temp accommodation and need timing to be able to book additional days/weeks in this place or be homeless. grrrr

Unreachable police

Am I missing something here? Normally I never have any reason to contact the police so I have no recent experience about doing so. In the past I have rung the Hastings police on odd occasions to discuss a minor matter and never had any trouble reaching them. Today I wanted to report a possible abandoned or stolen vehicle so I rang 105. I tried several times. I just get a disconnect signal. It sounds somewhat like a busy signal, but is slightly different.

I looked at their web page. There appears to be no way at all to reach them other than 105. No email, no alternate number, no way to leave a message or any information other than a lengthy complaint form that is completely irrelevant for this.

Individual stations used to have their own numbers. I found an old phone book I keep for precisely this purpose and looked it up. The number still works and I got through to a voicemail system that informed me that it would take forever to talk to someone. At least it informed me.

I have to say I am somewhat perplexed by this. I assume I could get through on 111 in an emergency (at least, I hope so!) but it also used to be possible to just ring up the local police for a chat about local concerns. Now it seems almost impossible to reach them at all and their rather unhelpful web site seems designed to keep the citizenry as far away as possible. Is this what we have been reduced to?

I am bothered that I can’t get 105 to work. I am bothered that there is no official alternative to 105. Can this have to do with my VOIP phone or is there something else going on? I don’t have a cell phone and I live at a rural address.

Unlike some people, I am not suspicious of the police and I see them as a friend. But this apparent inability to approach them by phone or email is concerning. Is this the new normal?

I'd imagine that that's the issue, and I'd suggest asking your VoIP provider.

With that said, alternative contact details should be provided! What if you don't have a phone at all, for example?

I thought 105 was only from mobiles? I would never have thought to try calling it from anything else.

they do have online reporting https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105#online-report-options

I find it hard to believe the police would only be contactable by mobile phone. Thanks though for the link. That is exactly what I was looking for. Maybe I just missed it on the local police web site, but I did go through it pretty carefully looking for exactly this.

"If you need to talk to us, call 105 from any mobile or landline." - https://www.police.govt.nz/105support. It goes on to mention the page richms linked above if you can't get in contact via 105.

It's quite tedious reporting things this way. I got a phone call weeks after reporting the location of a stolen vehicle asking what my involvement was, because the site asked a bunch of irrelevant questions and didn't just allow you to state the facts.

They were asking for feedback, so make sure you give some. The Police I've talked to about it seem to agree that improvement is needed.
