This is accurate. A headline is the header of an article. These are the latest headlines. You happen to have looked during an update. If you want to be a bit more serious look at the sections instead of the front page.

Stuff and NZH could be a lot better at presenting items based on interest. At the same time they both know that people spend more time on trivia/entertainment stories than those same people care to admit. If they don't publish those stories they lose readers and revenue.

Its called latest news headlines, most of it isn't News

Yes guys, it is actually news. Most of that is entertainment news, just happened to be updated at that time. Latest. Next time you click on that stuff, go look what section you arrive in. Entertainment or similar for most of that stuff.

Maybe it's just me (certainly possible) but I can't make any sense of this item at all. Lately it seems to me that the RNZ news site has been falling apart, with increasingly sloppy reporting and grammar. As near as I can tell, this piece seems to be about America Samoan objections to a court ruling that denies them citizenship, yet the article states precisely the opposite, that the court has ruled in their favour. As it stands, the article doesn't make any sense to me at all. Were the Samoans given citizenship or not? Do they object to that or something else? This is one of the more extreme examples of garbled writing I have encountered for some time. Or is it just me?

The headline "American Samoa US citizenship ruling faces appeals" is correct.

The Utah court ruled American Samoans are citizens. The State Department immediately appealed against this ruling. The judge decided to stay his decision pending judging of this appeal. The American Samoan government also issued an appeal arguing the ruling is correct.

The case is pending decision on these appeals.

I don’t understand why the American Samoa government and the Congresswoman would appeal the ruling, as reported in the first line. Surely they want American Samoans to have citizenship?

The second paragraph states that Judge Waddoups has ruled that American Samoans have citizenship because of the 14th amendment.

The next paragraph says that the Judge has ruled that the statute giving American Samoans citizenship is unconstitutional. So which is it? Am I missing something here? I sometimes have brain fades in my old age but I can’t figure this one out.

Whoa. Someone who never knew something was there got other people who never knew something was there to get excited like discovering a way to teletransport to Mars and the clickbait headlines came down like monsoon rain.

The Daily Star (I know, but found a link from somewhere else) headline: "Woman unveils genius free cleaning hack to keep toaster cables neat and tidy".

It actually parrots an article from The Sun "Woman’s ‘mind is blown’ after she finds toasters have a hidden cable tidy underneath them" - which is actually about something posted on Facebook.

One of the articles says "The trick is to turn your toaster upside down and wind your wires around the bumps."

Basically someone found out there are small bumps on the bottom of a toaster that you can use to shorten the power cables.

And that explains stupidity. Not that the feature is not widely known but that people can really say stupid things like "my life's changed" because of this.

Ok, exaggerating a bit. But it's stupid.

They appealled the stay.

The statute he refers to is "Under federal law, persons born in American Samoa are US Nationals,"

Citizenship and US nationality are not the same.

A federal law (statute) is not the constitution or an amendment. So the judge ruled the law is unconstitutional and American Samoans should be citizens, not nationals.

The judge is saying they aren't "US nationals" but full blown citizens. The State Department disagrees. American Samoan government and the congresswoman agree with full citizenship.

This reminds me a little of those American sites selling indoor TV antennas as some kind of revolutionary secret device to avoid paying for cable. As if FTA broadcasting has not existed in that country since the early 1950s. People today must be awfully ignorant to fall for those.

First of all, cubes aren't measured in square metres. Secondly, the article they cite as a reference estimates that it'd be about 8870 cubic metres (but points out that not all experts agree).

Click on the article and we get,

"The man, who was not a student and was in the city
visiting friends will appear in Dunedin District Court"

Several years ago there was an student bashing article in odt on how 50 people had been arrested over the two weeks of orientation events. In the last paragraph was the gem that only 4 were students...
