The finally successful Brexit deal. It appears that the UK has accepted the pony offered by the EU instead of continuing to insist on the unicorn. :-)

Watched an old (60s) movie with my parents last night. As was common in that era, it began with an overture and a blank screen. Dad was pottering around in the kitchen so didn't come into the room immediately.

Mum: Is there supposed to be any picture?
Me: No; it's the overture.
(Dad enters)
Dad: Why is there nothing on the screen?
Mum: It's the overture, you philistine!

Apologies to the weatherman. Beautiful sunny day in Wellington and no need to have four guests with one arm up, holding down the umbrella. 10 out of 10

Glad didnt send photos of department xmas party from last week. Crowd of 100 semi slightly drunk dancing the night away in a barn..

Even though the boys are teenagers, the looks on their faces as they opened their major gifts - absolutely priceless.

Seeing how it was around 6.5c - 10c in Wellington in the last few days, it's possible...

That even as my abilities diminish with advancing age, I can still diagnose and fix a faulty charging cable and connector on my laptop, in spite of them being designed to prevent this.

Geektastic:

Today is the 100th birthday of the father of a very good chum of mine from university.

Dickie is a lovely man and must be the luckiest person I have ever met. He flew as a Mosquito pilot with 605 Squadron in the second war, primarily doing very dangerous work over the continent. He survived that AND lived to be 100! That is pretty lucky.

They're having a socially distanced afternoon tea in the Village Hall to celebrate.

"DFC - Flight Lieutenant William Arthur Bird" - This officer has completed a very large number of sorties, involving attacks on airfields, locomotives and other targets. He has displayed skill and courage of a high order, setting an excellent example. In the course of his activities, Flight Lieutenant Bird has destroyed one and damaged several more enemy aircraft. He has also inflicted damage on very many locomotives."

A few days after his award Dickie had completed his tour of operations, and together with his Kiwi navigator Les Hodder had completed over 60 sorties with the Squadron."

I am sad to report that Dickie died at home on the 28th, having caught pneumonia following a fall. His funeral was sadly not permitted full military honours due to Covid restrictions on attendees etc but his coffin was draped with the RAF Ensign and his original officer’s cap was placed on it.
A bugler played the Last Post at the graveside.

A poem was read, High Flight.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

The number of those who fought or were even present must be getting very small now.

This reminds me of my feelings a few years ago towards WW1 veterans. It seemed like there was only a handful left but plenty that served in WW2. Now I'm getting that same feeling again towards the WW2 veterans. How quickly time marches on.
