I'd thought about a premium subscription. I don't mind paying to get good coverage. However their coverage prior to introducing a paywall wasn't flash in my opinion. Why would I waste good money on content I used to see that wasn't that good that is now behind a paywall, or have they upped their game significantly since the paywall was instituted?

I think at first most of the paywall stuff was articles from international papers who already charged for subscriptions like the New York Times.. I don't think they've upped their game, the only thing I sort of miss reading is Sideswipe but I just read similar things from other sites. To be honest I'd probably have subscribed to read it, but I don't like the idea of having to call them to cancel.

Since the lockdown has begun and Stuff/Herald journalism has taken a dive deeper in to the incredulous, I deleted all their links/apps from all my devices. I have linked/ installed newsroom and spinoff, donated to both, and life is somewhat less sensationalised now. I keep informed of the daily briefing at 1pm on RNZ.

And I still refuse to read articles headlined with a question mark ? It means they don't know and they're making stuff up.

You may be disappointed (or completely unsurprised) to find that headline is misleading. He actually bought the apartment off the plans 3 years ago and by the time it was built he didn't want it any more. So he sold it the day after taking possession of it. Not nearly as exciting as the headline makes out, eh? It seems like the Herald is trying to tap into the perception that Key is a dirty property speculator with that headline, trying to fuel outrage and views at the same time.

Haha, mildly surprised - but I've seen them do things like this before so I shouldn't be surprised at all. They seem to have a go at all sides (and middles) forming the political spectrum, seemingly in bulk numbers of articles at a time.

I don't personally see a problem if the headline WAS totally un-misleading. People doing due diligence would figure out what had transpired and if they didn't do their homework then that's just too bad. My bet would have been they didn't care.

I don't think he's actually pocketed it at all, he's using it to keep his business afloat.

It is dumb because the subsidy covers three months. The guy is not "keeping it" for his own sake. He's keeping it to pay wages (or seems like that because whomever wrote that article is really bad at English).

I do have a problem with companies that asked for the money even though they did not have a dip in revenues and even got more work after the lockdown. These are the ones that should be investigated.

Buying off the plans doesn't preclude you from being a dirty property speculator. In fact, I expect that would be typical for property speculators?

It's a perspective article. The headline is overdone slightly but essentially that's the guys perspective exactly as outlined in the article. The interviewee is saying money is going to construction businesses that don't really need it. The interviewee applied for and accepted the assistance the government is offering, and the interviewee is saying it's all a bad idea at the same time. It's a strong view and it's not surprising people like yourself react to it.

I thought there would be some confusion/contradiction around these payments - because the Government paid out 12 weeks of wage subsidies, and lockdown has potentially lasted for 5 weeks, before more people can go back to work - what exactly were they expecting to happen with the balance? they stipulate the amounts per week the subsidy pays for, and ask that employers top it up to 80%, presumably out of the business' money, not the actual subsidy. Of course, using the subsidy to do the topping up would be helpful for a business. But we don't actually know what's ahead in terms of the lockdown levels

There will of course be employees who are receiving the subsidy via their employer who will not be returning to work at Level 3... Perhaps the Government should have looked at weekly payments, though this would have caused a bit of a nightmare I imagine, with the possibility of people not receiving the money when they expect it.......

Catch 22!

It seems the main thing being stipulated is that the subsidy is used to help keep people in paid jobs, and the steel company guy appears to be having that intention
