Even asked if I took the mailbox down what would happen and they said they would hold it and deliver a notice to install a letterbox which I find bizzare.

There are quite a few houses in the Coromandel without letter boxes. They may be holiday homes but are comparable with the homes many kiwis live in. Marlborough Sounds has some residential properties only accessible by water, and probably don't have a letter box.

There are also rural properties where NZ Post doesn't deliver. 

There is a difference between a street address, a property (land ownership), and a property address.
