I’m watching ’Shtisel’ on Netflix - a soapy about Orthodox Jews living in Jerusalem. It’s light, low-key, insightful and quietly funny. Really different, brilliantly done and very enjoyable. In Hebrew with subtitles.

I have no Jewish connections (apart from having volunteered on a kibbutz in Northern Galilee for six months in 1976 with my girlfriend - now Mrs Code - as part of our OE) but I’m hooked on the show and have been bingeing it.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Brilliant!!

I am not a believer but I was educated in a C of E system so:

Yes it is irreverent (sex & Nudity) but it is extremely well scripted with a controversial narrative. But it also has some very insightful narratives. Some of the narrative could be straight from the pulpit. The acting is excellent. The staging & prop's are superb.

If the script writing had a message it was this; is that the C of E, Catholic & Islamic faiths and their splinted branches want; trust, friendship, love, peace, harmony and togetherness then they have to start enacting as one on those concepts because bearing in mind that:

Faith is individualistic and immutable and incorruptible.
Religion is a social construct,
made by Man for Man to explain Faith,
therefore it is fallible.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I tried that Warrior Nun thing on Netflix, very much a teen thing.

Has anyone watched the Steve Carrel Netflix Space one? I might give it a go tonight, just looks a bit generically US humour, ie not funny to me, i generally prefer British comedys, its a shame there isnt more Brit stuff on there.

Oh, finished off "The Line of Duty", Brit show based on real life Police Corruption, at least it makes out its based off real life.

After Luther I had to find something else as that was brilliant, so found S1 of The line of Duty, its been a binge each season since. Good show 8/10

It's...OK.

It's not the best, but I certainly didn't find it to be the worst either.

Star Trek: Discovery (S01E10-11 Despite Yourself/The Wolf Inside) - 9/10

I'm enjoying this show so much, I feel bad that I didn't get into this back when it was first shown. I'm about two-thirds of the way through the first season, and have finished what is "kind of" a 2-parter (I think it might end up being a three-parter with the next episode, though there is an arc running through the whole series which makes the concept of a multi-part story a bit meaningless). I don't really get "shocked" when I watch TV - so many twists are so obvious and well foreshadowed that I tend to shrug and move on. Or it's obvious that something is not what it seems. But with these two episodes I actually audibly gasped at two moments (I won't spoil for anyone who is watching but hasn't got this far).

As I watched this pair of episodes I was put in mind of the classic TNG S3 story "The Best of Both Worlds." This isn't quite up there, but it's getting close. The moment when Picard is assimilated by the Borg is such a seminal moment in Trek history, and I felt a similar experience when the duality of a specific character was revealed. The storytelling leading up to that moment was really well done. Even my scrolling through IMDB in between episodes didn't spoil it (more by luck than anything), and I'm really grateful. It made the impact of that moment all the stronger.

Discovery is fast becoming one of my favourite shows at the moment. Like Picard it's "modern" Trek, but I think I prefer Discovery's more "conventional story format. It's not "villain of the week" stuff, but not quite as single-story arc-driven as Picard. It strikes a good balance between the two styles.

Just enjoyed Concert de Paris on France 2. It comes around every year so I guess it qualifies as a series. Great for those of us who miss European culture.

I've just started watching The Man in the High Castle on Amazon.

I really enjoyed Snowpiercer. The whole idea behind it is dumb (have not seen the movie) but it works. I really got involved in the story.

Watching A Brave New World and while I will finish it, it definitely loses a lot (depth/soul/meaning ... ) from the book

Just finished the 5th season of Line of Duty

British cop show based around the anti corruption squad that investigates corrupt police.

EXTREMELY well written with lots of trickery

warning: this is highly addictive series and may result in you being very tired for work the next day - really looking forward for the 6th season to drop later in the year

Get Shorty the tv series not the movie, Netflix USA, 8.2 imdb. Starring Chris O'Dowd and Ray Ramano, Series 1 only on Netflix at this stage, there's 3 in total. Only watched 2 episodes so far but enjoying it.

@eracode Have you watched Unorthodox also from Israel. The lead is the daughter from Shltsel. Also on Netflix. Great drama. Had to change the i to a l as shllt isn't allowed lol

Yep thanks - have seen Unorthodox and realised the same actor in both. Unorthodox isn’t an Israeli series - it was made in Germany. Quite enjoyed it - but totally loved Shtisel. Would really like to see more seasons.

BTW - the name of the programme is Shtisel - so there was no need to try and avoid spelling Sh*t. 😁
