Not a headline, but the article states "this week, an 8m-long monitor lizard emerged from a canal", and links to https://www.complex.com/life/giant-lizard-7-eleven-video; where it is called "6 feet long".

6 feet is about 2 meters.  Where did the 4x multiplier come from?  The stuff writers imagination?

It has already been corrected to 1.8 meters. They must really watch this thread.

Not so much a 'dumb' headline as utter astonishment at a hit piece to ruin some poor bastards life because presumably it was a slow news day or something.

Not sure I see your issue with this. He was supposed to be wearing a mask. He wasn't. Why wasn't he? Presumably he knows better.

From TFA:

Wearing a face covering during journeys on public transit and domestic flights is required to limit the spread of Covid-19.

They forgot the bit that says "unless you're in West Auckland, in which case masks aren't required". Been on buses there where I was the only person on the reasonably-full bus wearing a mask. The first time it happened I checked the news to see if they'd removed the requirement for masks but no, it was just that everyone was ignoring it.

(In case people ask for "where in West Auckland", it was buses around the Swanson/Henderson/Massey area. Trains there were already hit-and-miss, but nowhere near as bad as buses seem to be).

It is an offence to go unmasked, punishable by a $300 infringement notice or a fine of up to a $1000 imposed by the courts.

Any AT people want to make a small fortune out in West Auckland?

It does raise, again, the issue of when is "Mandatory" not actually mandatory?  While there are requirements and a penalty structure in place, it was made clear at the start that drivers and ticket collectors would not be responsible for enforcing it.  So, who is?  And why aren't they doing so?

Admittedly not at peak hour (I don't catch a daily commuter train), but haven't seen a single bus or train service where everyone onboard was wearing one since they became mandatory. I've seen several Wellington train services where you'd be lucky if 25% of the people on board were wearing one...

For all we know he might have just forgotten his mask this one day , or misplaced it and didn't have time to find it before the train left. The newspaper could have made the same points without posting the guys name or photo all over the place. Yes he should be wearing one, but even if he works for a DHB this is not national news.

"more than one-third of New Zealanders Fell Victim to Cybercrime"... yet the actual article says "over a third say they feel more vulnerable to cybercrime than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic began". Around 15% actually fell victim.

It's been a stalwart at Kiwi kids' birthday parties for years - but now the humble party food has come under fire for its "outdated and offensive" name.

A change.org petition to change the name of fairy bread has gained more than 1000 signatures.

Thisd be a good story for other media outlets to pick up. Assuming they're not afraid to cast the first stone.

I keep seeing more and more typos, misspellings, basic grammar errors, basic editing errors, etc. etc. in the print articles of major media, including so-called 'quality' media like RNZ. I have reached a point where I am well and truly fed up with this indifferent incompetent sloppiness. If you can't afford to hire a decent sub-editor, you have no business pretending to be engaged in journalism. (Edit: forget to mention utter and complete absence of any fact-checking or making the slightest effort to do anything other than brainless copy and paste.)

And then they have the nerve to beg for money!

With all the ongoing complaints here about our crap media, I feel it is worthwhile posting this extensive quote from RNZ on media coverage of the historic Samoa election, as compared to the ridiculous, stupid, disproportionate copy and paste reporting on the death of Prince Philip, all of which I, like many others, went out of my way NOT to view.

Prince Philip was nearly 100 years old, for christsake. He was ill. Old men die. It would have been a miracle if he hadn't expired. It is hardly news that he did. As an historic figure, a brief summary of his life and times would not have been out of place, but nothing like the endless drivel we were subjected to. In addition to the declining technical quality of our media (typos, spelling and grammar errors, lazy reporting, dumb judgement calls, lack of minimal editing, etc.) the idiotic prioritisation of an age-appropriate death of a distant figure of a fading colonial entity on the other side of the world over the much more relevant (to many New Zealanders) election result in Samoa is not only astonishingly insensitive and out of touch, but incredibly arrogant and dumb. After reading this piece I immediately went to the Spinoff site and gave them some more money. At least they are making an effort.

QUOTE:

It's likely our biggest newsrooms' failure to comprehensively cover the election reflects their continuing issues with diversity.

Despite increases in Māori representation, there’s still a shortage of Pasifika journalists and editors in our mainstream newsrooms, particularly in leadership positions.

It could also reveal a conscious or subconscious bias in what they see as their audience. As the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum last year, journalists like Wesley Lowery argued that when media leaders and journalists imagine their readership, they often picture middle-class or affluent white people and tend to accept the "views and inclinations of whiteness... as the objective neutral".

New Zealand media organisations aren’t immune to that kind of bias. Their coverage of housing often defaults to speaking to their audiences as if they already own a home or  - in some cases - as if they're already landlords.

University of Auckland lecturer Seuta'afili Dr Patrick Thomsen was one who noted the dearth of local coverage.

Dr Thomsen told Mediawatch it showed a lack of connection between our mainstream media organisations and Pacific communities.

"The only people who are covering our communities are ourselves so that begs the question around who do we value in this country," said Dr Thomsen.

"I think our communities have disengaged with a lot of these mainstream publications."

That disengagement could mean commercial media don't see stories about the Pacific as a major source of revenue and audience growth.

But there should be a sizeable audience for Pacific news in New Zealand. There are 120,000 people who identify as Samoan in Auckland alone, and nearly 400,000 people who identify as one of the 30 distinct Pacific ethnic groups in New Zealand.

Even if that wasn't the case, popularity isn't everything.

News organisations usually won’t shy away from publishing stories that don't rate if they think they're historically significant.

The most recent example of that is the coverage of Prince Philip's death. In addition to provoking thousands of complaints, it caused notable slumps in audience for the BBC and other news organisations.

The media devoted plenty of attention to the news anyway because it was seen as important. For many of our media organisations, the Samoan election didn’t meet that same threshold - and that's a revealing insight into their priorities.
