Paul1977:

I would have liked a season 1 recap like a lot of shows have as it's been a long time since I watched it. Just a quick refresher to remind me of who the characters were would have gone a long way. I've only watched the first episode, so maybe flashbacks will fill in some gaps?

I usually rely on YouTubers for that. Most TV series have a recap done by a third party.

Watched The Block NZ, S546, E4? last night.

I really like the constant plot shifts and character development that they write into this show.

It's hard to fit all of the various stars and the inevitable cameos into a show that is only an hour long each episode, but boy, oh boy, they give them all airtime!

It's edge-of-your-seat stuff as there's confusion over whether the Tauranga mums are going to pick the biggest house (after stating that they simply can't cope and it's way too big), the boys with lots of hair and teeth choose to strip wallpaper without thinking it through and the man with a topknot, despite being mostly hair-free up there, is a constant threat to the other contestants, because he knows how to build stuff real good.

But the real sub-plot that is being glossed over is the tale of the two brothers from Westport. Or somewhere like Westport. Possibly Greymouth. Or Blackball.

One brother is a typical West-Coast tradie - laid back and possibly a bit stoned. The other brother is not. He's well-groomed and uptight. It's mentioned that he left the Coast when he was a teen "because I needed somewhere bigger"...er, no. We all know why you left the Coast - because you're quite obviously homosexual and they don't like "that kind" in those parts. It's a massive plot twist that nobody is talking about. But will it matter? I think the bigger question is why they keep referring to him as a "Architect Grad" when they previously mentioned he's a banker. He seems to have the architectural knowledge to have been a "grad" at some point, but how long do you remain a "grad"? That's the really big question that they may never answer.

Edgy, raw and real? Or carefully scripted, well edited and quite asinine? I'll let you be the judge.

Oh, and while we are on the subject of judges - turns out the judges aren't even from the local court system! Nobody saw that coming! They're about as entitled to be called "Your Honour" as Mark Richardson!

MaxineN:

I decided to re-sub back to Amazon Prime Video and I recently discovered The Expanse. Being a huge science fiction nerd(I love Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica both TOS and Re-imagined) this is certainly tickling an itch I had for a long time. So far just started Season 2 and I'm rather fond of the twists and I've got a few favourite characters as well(Miller and Amos).

The Expanse is great Sci-fi... it was originally a Sy-fy network show but got cancelled after 3 seasons, after a campaign to keep it on the air Amazon picked it up (apparently Bezos is a fan)

Miller and his relationship with Holden gets better and better

..but wait until you hit season 3 and David Strathairn turns up...  sea Shanties ahoy....

Can't recommend  the series "Save Me" enough. Written, created by and starring Lennie James (Walking Dead, Line of Duty season 1). Gritty and pretty dark in places, with superb performances all round.

2 seasons (second one is called Save Me Too, which won best Drama series at the BAFTAs).

Also stars the ever excellent Stephen Graham, who I'm keen to see in the 3 part series "Time" as well.

Wow, finished Mare of Easttown last night, what a great show! Twists and turns everywhere. It kept me guessing till near the end.

There are some tortured souls in middle Americas small towns!

Now that I have finished that and In the Line of Duty I need a new drama series to keep my interests up.

Bosch Season 7 on Prime now. This is the last season but an interview on the LA Times hints at a new series being produced for IMDB TV and a Netflix series with The Lincoln Lawyer (Bosch's half-brother).

Jimmy McGovern's "Time" with Sean Bean and Stephen Graham is superb and well worth a watch.

Also, just started the Aussie comedy series "Utopia" on Netflix. Similar humour to "W1A". Much bureaucratic absurdity to enjoy!

I have just seen the advert for the New Zealand drama ‘The Brokenwood Mysteries’

The 30 seconds I saw was enough. Why are NZ dramas always so amateurish?

(Maybe because I’ve just finished watching the excellent Mare of Easttown).

it is strange most kiwi's cringe at watching NZ dramas but you see the IMDB reviews and people from everywhere else love them
