Windy and rainy in Auckland for the last 24hours. Just a stormy day of no particular note I would have thought but based on media reports you'd think we were in the middle of a catastrophe.

Media and Metservice both still very aware they gave no warning of the January 2023 floods. They won't be caught short again for another few years.

Behodar:

No rain in Whakatane either, although we're only under a "watch", not a warning. Apparently Tauranga got a bit of rain this morning though.

A "bit", overnight, this morning and continuing on currently in Tauranga.   Can only hope if keeps the "out of towners" away for a quiet easter

I've had two power outages so far today, and my lights are flickering again. I'm holding my breath...

Mildly bad weather is NOT an emergency! Stop sending those BS warning messages to all our phones. Just received a warning about thunderstorms (big deal!) in Auckland, through to 2:15pm.

This feels ignorant of the people who were flooded out last night. We missed having our home flooded by perhaps 2mm of rain.

I'll take it over no warning thanks.

I don't agree.

We've also experienced flooding in our street in late 2022. Two vehicles were written off and homes threatened. It would have been much worse had the neighbours not worked together to clear the drains and move other vehicles. I couldn't care less about the lack of warning. We just got on and did what we needed to do. Any rain brings the potential for flooding in isolated areas. It's a fact of life, not something to warn a third of the population about.

Well they sent that warning thru with a few mins that it was in force for, and then another one extending to 3pm.

There has been nothing after those warnings. Its not even raining. They should have sent them out last night before the mad wind and rain.

It's probably an emergency to anyone who's paranoid about their property values shedding even a few dollars.

The TV game "Deal or No deal" consistently annoys me. I catch the last minute frequently while waiting for another show.

The premise is there are 26 suitcases with values ranging from 0.50 to 200,000. The suitcases are skewed in quantity toward lower numbers.

The holder of the suitcase is asked "how much do you think is in your suitcase?" as if that matters.

Today's there were two suitcases left, one $5,000 and $100,000. A blonde holder kept saying "I have $100,000" in my suitcase.

The "bank" offered $50,000 if the contestant quit, accepted the "deal". This is the highest percentage Estimated Value "EV" amount I've ever seen.

The contestant accepted the deal (quit) offer. Lo and behold the blonde suitcase holder was wrong, holding $5,000. Everyone celebrated including the clueless suitcase holder.

The reason the contestant chose to take the deal? She had a vision of the number 9 as a chocolate chip cookie ???

If you wanted to simulate random chance of certain case values being left at the end, we could calculate that -- but the number of cases left is always in contestant control, by not accepting a any "Deal".

If the player always chooses to continue, the game always leads to two cases. There’s no random elimination that prevents that.

So structurally, the odds are 100% -- the show is designed to bring you to two cases unless you "Deal" early. Obviously the longer you go, it's very likely the few high value amounts are likely to disappear.

My guess is only around 5 to 10% of players make it to the final 2 suitcases and accept the offer there.

So strictly it's not randomness, but stupid people mostly ignoring the expected value (EV, average of all remaining case amounts) and mostly relying on gut feelings.

The only skill is the gameshow employee running the "bank", the offers to quit. It seems if the player is risk-averse, the banker may lowball more aggressively. Conversely, a braindead players might get higher offers because they are too stupid to accept a reasonable offer.

It shouldn't annoy me, but it does.

Visit the toilet. Check your email. Pet the cat. Put on something more comfortable. Lots of ways to fill a spare minute.

What kind of gremlin orchestrates a fridge malfunction while the owners are away! The cameras alerted me to someone in the house. Checked it to see my daughter on her knees soaking up dead animal juices. She said it was stinking but still partially freezing and the top was cold. Told her to shut the door and I will deal with it on my happy homecoming. Ugh! And I was dreading unpacking which now sounds like a pleasure in comparison. Fridge is two years old.
