I must have missed a memo. The one detailing how it's now acceptable to rev your engine and hoon up and down the street at 4:15 in the morning. And again at 5. And again at 5:45.

Time to start practicing the hammer throw or cabre toss at roughly the same time ?

Accompanied with the prerequisite bagpipes ?

Noise control (his dad) turned up at about 6, and it was blissfully silent last night. But I'm still going to talk to his mum when she gets back because I suspect that'll have more effect than bagpipes!

Firefox's 'Restart to Keep Using Firefox'

I have half my work open in an incognito window dealing with multiple clients and have it checked to let me choose when to install updates... Infuriating every time.

End of year reviews and the old "bell curve" trope that gets rolled out every year...

Going to?

I'd suggest it already is.

Performance reviews that are only a box ticking exercise and don't have any possible benefit.

Could you be more specific please?

End of year reviews for someone in their sixties who is performing quite adequately but has no desire for further 'self development', no ambition for promotion and no intention of applying for a different position: i.e they're in their "retirement job".
I've been on both sides of that conversation. Sigh

I have a +60yr old team member in exactly this position. HR requires that we still under take performance reviews and development discussions. So we put them in the calendar, go make ourselves a coffee then occupy a meeting room for 60mins chatting about bikes, bike packing, tramping and anything else that we have a common interest in that isn't work. Some of the most productive hours of my quarter!

There needs to be some sort of sinecured emeritus category for us old curmudgeons who know a lot of stuff and can do everything that needs to be done without requiring supervision or assistance, and just want to be left alone.

I'm not an old curmudgeon yet, but I can certainly appreciate what you're getting it!

My most memorable performance review was from a manager who seemed to be "over" all the bureaucracy, so it ended up being a walk in the park. Literally.
