Like i said earlier if they did something good (i.e. apple products and laptops etc) train their staff in these products so they know what they are talking about then I think there is a place for them in the market.

:P Yes but I am not saying just apple. Plus not that many yoobee stores around.
If DSE stocked a good range of laptops and laptop accessories and train their staff on what is best for "x" and good for "y" for the customer then I think there is room in the market for it.
You want to get to a point where when you think "i need a new laptop" then the first place you think about is DSE as they have the biggest/best range, there are already way to many stores that try to be everything for everyone and really not doing it well.

Rikkitic: Went into Dick Smith Hastings yesterday. It was a sad-looking place. Looks to me like they are on the verge of closing down. Asked for some batteries and was told to try Jaycar.

Strange. Lower Hutt have heaps of stock. Just purchased a few boxes of the 40 Bulk Pack AA for $8 per pack (less a further 10%) and 30 Pack AAA for $6 per pack (less a further 10%). It doesn't matter how many rechargeable batteries I have at home and the office, I can never find a battery when I need one.

Arent most consumers moving away from laptops though and going the tablet route? for a laptop I would think

- justlaptops
- jb hifi
- noelleeming
- harvey norman

honestly DSE wouldnt even cross my mind. I think theres room for them, but only if they seriously lower their prices. Their locations are convenient and sometimes you do need a cable and dse is the closest thing around, but $30 for a basic cable makes me drive to either pbtech, or a $2 store.

Their only point of difference seems to be their own DSE branded stuff, which looks very poor quality but is not priced that way. The only thing I ever bought with their brand on it was a variable voltage adapter with a range of tips, probably an old version of this, which has proved useful a few times.

Hmmm I need one of those, was going to buy it from jaycar, but dse might be selling them for $10 now :D

got a iphone 5 64gb today ion palmy for a little over $500, not bad and will do as a short term replacement after TNT/NZcouriers lost my iPhone 6 that was being sent in for repair.

I picked up my $599 Sony a6000 from Featherston St in Wellington at lunchtime today - I'm absolutely over the moon with this camera at this price. It cost $5 to have it shipped from Rotorua but I'm not complaining with the enormous discount on the price of the camera.

While I was there I picked up a box each of 40xAA and 30xAAA batteries ($8 each) and an OTG cable - male micro USB to female USB - ($5). I was hoping to find some cheap SD cards of a non-Dick Smith brand for the camera, but no luck - yet.

Anyhoo, a work colleague saw the camera and was very interested, so contacted the store closest to his home (Paraparaumu) and they said they didn't have any and couldn't help. He then made a few phone calls himself and found one at Sylvia Park in Auckland, so went into Featherston St and they're having it sent down ($6 shipping). So don't necessarily take the first "no" for an answer - it pays to shop around.

same for palmy. at first glance looks like business as usual and the shop is clean and tidy, but plenty of open space and a few empty shelves

Pro tip... 16x AA batteries is $2... so for $8 you can actually get 64AA batteries if you buy them in lots of 16...

No they still have heaps of stock, but much is high priced and doesn't appear to be moving some sections like home security and tvs, and games are quite sparse.

Their stock situation looks kind of patchy at DSE Riccarton. Plenty of TVs if you want a JVC, some Samsungs as well. Lots of stock in their kitchen section. Not as many laptops on display as a month ago. Quite a few printers in stock but that area looks a little bare. External hard drives but only Seagates I could see. Less than a dozen cameras on display. Plenty of display phones in the Spark, Skinny, Vodafone, and 2 degrees sections.

Anybody have any idea how much DSE are selling Nespresso Inissia machines for (If they sell them at all)

I couldn't see a single one in the two stores I visited on Saturday.

BTW. Just checked the DSE Facebook and this weekend you can take a further 10% off some items, but there are some exclusions.
