The changeover at supermarkets seems to have been fairly uneventfull, ie people seem to have just got on with it.

Obviously, from the submissions public support, is behind it.

Checkout operators have started getting concerned about handling of filthy bags. Whilst most people may well take care and keep their resuable bags clean some will not. They are already concerned about packing groceries in bags that smell bad.

They are asking for disposable gloves to deal with this issue.

I don't agree that the submissions prove how much public support there is.

For a start we don't know how many submissions they got to know whether or not it's a representative sample. Secondly those in support of this proposal I suspect are much much more vocal than those who are are opposed or are just ambivalent and are therefore much more likely to have made a submission.

Personally I think the whole thing is just a big charade with no net benefits. It will likely replace one problem with another.

Yes it's done and we'll all move on. The fact it's done is no surprise when you have ideology being the main driving force. Unfortunately this is a failing of both the Greens and Labour.

not when Countdown sell plastic bags to replace the thinner free plastic bags and i have yet to see anyone use them more than once

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Sometimes it helps to step back and ask yourself what this is really all about. Those who cry about the removal of single-use bags are precious whingers who can’t be bothered to lift even a finger to make even the slightest changes to their “it’s all about me” lifestyle. Heaven forbid that they should have to put up with such an enormous inconvenience as having to remember to bring their own bag. What an imposition! How dare those greenies!

Come on, people. Get over yourselves. The world worked perfectly well before there were plastic bags. It won’t end without them. Plastic is a miracle product. It has a lot of valuable uses. But this isn’t one of them.

If a reusable bag gets cruddy, replace it. You will still have had the use of it several times so it has done its job. If you are worried about contaminated shopping, ask the shops to wrap your goods in paper. They should do that anyway. If you use your car for shopping, take a tiny modicum of trouble and keep some bags in your boot in case you forget one. Personally, I prefer cardboard boxes, which I also get from the supermarkets, though not all provide them like they used to (they should). Shopping goes loose in the cart, then goes into the boxes. What is the big problem?

If you walk to the shops, there are some great shopping bags on wheels to solve all of your problems. All it takes is a little – very little – forethought.

And before someone starts going on about the environmental burden of paper and cardboard, consider that no turtle has been found with paper shoved up its nose, and no dolphin has been discovered wrapped in paper packaging and no whale has died with a stomach full of paper. Unlike plastic, paper decomposes easily and leaves far fewer toxins behind.

I'm not looking forward to Christmas shopping next year.

Maybe the retailers will have bags, that pass govt regulations with handles.

I don't know what I'm going to buy and some things need small bags, others larger and not interested in walking around with pockets stuffed fall of bags.

If people are walking do you really expect them to be pushing a bags on wheels what ever that is. Plus you have to get it on the bus.

Might just buy everything online next year.

Edit: I have a back pack, which I've used when shopping, but some presents are to large for it.

The real problem isn't solved by banning single use bags. Banning single use bags is only fiddling around the edges and isn't addressing the root issues. The real problem is responsible disposal of rubbish which includes plastic bags.

nothing to do with inconvenience, i have shopped at Paknsave for years without needing bags, i put everything into a shopping basket in the boot, i just dont like the double standards that supermarkets show in saying we are doing it for the environment yet still sell plastic bottles and plastic packaging and plastic bags for your groceries . it seems more to do with money than actually trying to save the environment.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Agree completely. But plastic bags are a start. It gets people used to the idea. I think that is a win.

Agree that supermarkets are not paragons of selfless virtue, but I still think this is a step in the right direction, however hypocritical the motivation.
