Agree completely. But plastic bags are a start. It gets people used to the idea. I think that is a win.

Get used to what idea? Banning single use bags doesn't make those who are irresponsible with how they dispose of their rubbish change their ways. Unfortunately I don't see this as a win. It doesn't stop empty burger wrappers and empty shake containers getting thrown on the roadsides.

So no the turtles are going to be killed by heavy weight plastic bags and have their habitat destroyed by global warming instead. If only the greens thought about what they are doing.

The issue why single use plastic bags are being banned (in many places around the world - the EU already has on single use plastics not just bags) as far as I am aware is that they cannot be disposed of. They don’t decompose and generally can’t be recycled.

Because of that, they tend to find their way into the environment and it really doesn’t matter about the level of intended responsibility.

But I agree, I would have liked to have seen the ban on single-use plastics, not just bags.

I don’t see why paper bags and paper wrapping can’t be used in most cases.

In terms of bags, I have a micro-bag that folds up into a pouch that will fit into a pocket or carry bag. I think I got it from a computer show a long time ago. I do like the paper bags at the supermarkets, especially since they are reasonably priced.

Personally, I think this is one place where technology and innovation ( or adopting old technology in terms of paper bags) and making it better works.

Yes, we do something. We don't put an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff we address the the underlying cause. We educate people on the impacts of their actions and enforce responsible actions. I'd have thought that was the obvious solution.

Checkout operators have started getting concerned about handling of filthy bags. Whilst most people may well take care and keep their resuable bags clean some will not. They are already concerned about packing groceries in bags that smell bad.

They are asking for disposable gloves to deal with this issue.

Absolutely the reason a ban shouldn’t go ahead. Not.

Regardless, between “click and collect” and self-checkout the days of the checkout operator are likely coming to a close.

Why are you supporting the greens going backwards? This ban does more damage than good. You realise there is no planet B, right? Pretending that heavy weight plastic is not going to kill sea life is pointless. I believe the government should ban all non-degradable plastic packaging. The thickness of the item makes no difference.

The turtles will be fine. The ban includes the heavier plastic bags currently sold by Countdown - they're gone as well.

The turtles will be fine. The ban includes the heavier plastic bags currently sold by Countdown - they're gone as well.

So even heavier plastic bags will be used. We are going in the wrong direction. We should be using less plastic. Why do people want to increase plastic usage?
