Paulthagerous: To be honest, when we are talking about 3 cell batteries, 5Whr's is a big difference.  As battery life is one of the more important specs for many people (myself included), I would hope for at least the original's 28.  Among my friends, a 23 will not quite last 2 lectures whereas a 28 will just (both running word + firefox on xp, all else very similar)

Good to know Paul.  The ASUS claims impressive battery life but you're right that the more grunt the battery has the better.  I'm in the other boat in that I'm not so worried about the battery as I expect to be using it mostly off the mains.  That's why a removable battery would be preferrable to me as I don't expect to be using it very much.  Only when I'm away on holiday, etc.

From what I can see, ASUS have supplied all their netbooks with a number of different battery specs over the life-cycle of each model.  Maybe they have produced a more powerful 3-cell one for the 1005.  Or maybe we might see a 6-cell be provided.

I guess it's all speculation until we see some damn specs from HN.  They need to get an announcement out there with what they've asked ASUS to provide/build.  It's not all that hard.  The main areas of contention are going to be battery life, processor/graphics chips specs, and physical dimensions/weight of the unit.  Other things like screen size, keyboard size, ports, camera/audio, hard drive seem to be pretty standard across all brands and models in this sector of the netbook market.

I suspect they may not say anything until delivery as otherwise they will no doubt get people who will not be happy with a particular specification. I just hope they don't pull an underarm on us.

Had a phone call from HN Lower Hutt, they said that the netbook is going to be an ASUS same spec as the HP, expected delivery time end of Jan. No mention of the exact model number as they going to be specially made...

I had a phone call To'o this morning on the machine. They also said they were specially building the computer, this should mean it will include win 7, as xp is no longer supplid on new built machines.

I'd tend to bet on them being XP. Windows 7 would cost them significantly more, also they could create more problems by not being the same spec. I, for one, require an XP machine because  the software I want to use on it will not run on Windows 7.

Wouldn't Windows 7 struggle on 1GB RAM?

Currently using XP on my desktop so happy to stick to it.

W7 scales nicely to lower spec systems.
Try not to compare it with Vista :)

Windows 7 wouldn't cost any more than XP if they were building new machines.

My sister got the exact same thing this morning for her order and mine, both from Lower Hutt. ie late jan, ASUS, custom built so no model number, exact same specs.

On what information do you base that?

I would concur that win 7 should be about the same price as xp because it is just xps replacement

Interesting though that the netbooks with the same specs are retailing for $50-100 more with windows 7. Look too at the link below about the extra the MS is getting for win 7.

However why would anyone want windows 7 starter, don't get me wrong I like windows 7 but the starter version is very restrictive, the biggest of which in my opinion is the lack of aero - oh and you can't change backgrounds on the desktop

Percieved value has nothing to do with the cost price. Of couse one will sell with win 7 for more than one with XP, but when I last looked at the cost prices they were about the same for both OS's

Got a response to my email from Anna Johnson this morning and a phone call from the Propeitor of HN Lower Hutt a couple of hours later. Confirmed the ASUS brand but couldn't give a model number of the chassis that they're doing the custom build on. Will just have to wait and see what transpires.
