13 hours the secret soldiers of benghazi 9.5/10

Seriously one of the most sobering and emotionally effective movies I have seen in a number of years.

I'll never forget firing semi auto weapons whilst in the USA and wondering how soldiers could do it, let alone with other people shooting at them. Gave me a newfound respect for military forces. This story was mainly centered around private military force, which for probably good reason have had a lot of bad press over the years, but this story showed the other side. Some very thought provoking moments and some heart-breaking ones too. You'd be a stronger person than me not to feel your eyes dampening I imagine. Some amazing displays of courage by many people. The acting was very good as well. I thought they caught the essence of everything pretty nicely.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E - 4/10

Another film from the "trailer was better than the movie" box. I never really watched the TV show, apart from maybe the odd episode when the re-ran them on a Saturday afternoon. As a devoted Bond fan it should have been an easy transition, given the "spy" genre. However, the show never really caught my imagination. The movie trailer, on the other hand, made it look like a fun film. In reality, I found it dull and generic, with little to recommend it. The period setting is probably the best thing going for it, allowing a rich style to be used, and for poking fun at "high-tech" 60s spy gadgets.

Part of my lack of interest came down to the cast. I realised after the film finished that I haven't really enjoyed any role of Armie Hammer's. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy movies he's in (e.g. Social Network was a good film; The Lone Ranger was not). I think I just find him boring, charmless and bleh. Henry Cavill was pretty good as Napoleon Solo, and Elizabeth Debicki, playing the villain, wasn't too bad. But the plot was pretty average, and didn't really grab me. Hugh Grant gets parachuted into the plot mid-way and injects a little casual British humour, but it isn't enough to save the film.

It's pretty clear they wanted to make an origin story from which they could springboard a franchise, but I think it would have been better to do a cold start with the leads already in place as UNCLE agents, and come back to how they got started once the franchise was already up and running. I have to say, though, based on this film I can't see much of a future.

10 Cloverfield Lane

I didn't enjoy the original Cloverfield that much (mainly because I'm not a fan of the "found footage" genre) so went in with fairly low expectations, but I really enjoyed it. Anyway, it's not a sequel - more like a separate story in a "Cloverfield Universe". It's hard to talk about the film without giving the whole thing away, so all I'll say is that there are a couple subplots that try to get you leaning one way or the other, but it did have me changing my mind a couple of times about what was really going on. And good acting from John Goodman...

Saw Batman v Superman last weekend and I have to say I have mixed feelings. I had fears that WB/DC were trying too hard to play catch up with Disney/Marvel and those fears came true to a sense. It felt rushed and IMO they should have introduced us to the Justice League one by one in their own standalone movies first. On the other hand though there really was some great bits as well. For instance for anyone worried that Ben Affleck wouldn't do Batman justice, fear not, I really liked his portrayal although he still needed more of a back story, yes we all know it but it felt incomplete without it. Overall 6.5/10

I want a standalone Batman movie and I'm heartened by the rumours that Affleck has written the story and may direct. Snyder, while always visually impressive, has no restraint and BvS was a prime example of shoehorning as much as possible, in fact even more than is possible, into a story creating a disjointed mess. One review I saw that I agree with said it was less of a plot and more just a sequence of unrelated events one after the other. Character motivations were bizarre and I still don't know how Luther expected his poor excuse for a plan to play out.

It's sad really, it's a terrible treatment of two of the best comic characters of all time. Superman is a DICK in this film, and Batman is a Xenophobe. It's almost like an allegory for the Republican nominee race. But then all of a sudden they're BFF's after 90 minutes of hearing why they both hate each other, and a ten minute hissy fit between themselves.

Boo! BOO I SAY!

Batman vs Superman.

Good Acting, Ben Affleck was credible as Batman, and as Bruce Wayne.

Overall the movie was rubbish though. 4/10 for me.

I am a bit disappointed about the poor Batman vs Superman reviews (not just in this thread, but everywhere).

I haven't seen this yet, but will as I have been a huge Batman fan for as long as I can remember, but it seems to be getting panned. Little or no plot, poor cast choices (Lex Luther should have been "Heisenberg" not Eisenberg), weird dream sequences that make no sense unless you know the whole DC story already, other Justice League characters bolted on with very little significance to the story and, worst of all, neither Batman nor Superman behave true to their DC Universe characters. After the groans heard around the world when Ben Affleck was announced as the new Batman, who'd'a thought that would be the best part of the film?

@Hobchild is right - it would have been better to start with a series of standalone films giving decent backstory to each character in this time-frame, i.e. we don't need to see Bruce Wayne's parents getting murdered again - maybe a couple of sentences in a conversation between Bruce and Alfred would suffice, but let's find out why he's become such a bitter old(er) man. Let's get decent origin stories for Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Then drag them all together into a film (against a villain who's scheme makes sense).

Suffice to say I really want to like this but it sounds like it's just a big mess.

HOWEVER - I am feeling oddly compelled to go see it again sans all the baggage of my expectations going into it the first time. There's some cool imagery in there, and some awesome nods to DCEU stuff that I want to see again. I just hope I can make it through the whole thing again.

Indeed. I've seen Deadpool. It was great to see one of these types of flicks that for once didn't take itself seriously. The liberal swearing made a change from all those American PG13 flicks that seem to come off a conveyor belt.

fury aus/nz bd vs. us bd

another local disc that sounds inferior to an import.

both have a dts hd-ma soundtrack, the nz sounds like mainly stereo, the us has a much more immersive surround sound field.

also the nz colour palette is much more monochromatic.
