Zootopia - Albany Events cinemas. 6/10 This was not as good as we expected it to be. While it was made really well it lacked the wit or excitement I thought it would have. It had loads of undercurrent themes that the kids did not relate to and the story was to plain and simple. It only got some reaction from the audience when the sloths hit the screen which was a really cool scene. Very surprised it is rating so well as it is nowhere near as good as the likes of Toy Story 1 & 3, The Croods, Frozen, Inside Out, Brave, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Incredibles and even Cars which are still at the top of my list.

I would have liked a little more plot filler etc, felt I needed more, but in all amazing acting and scenery.

I'm a bit worried I'll be comparing it to the book all the time.

Must keep in mind it's a very different beast from the looks of it.

I just watched Wilderpeople. I quite enjoyed it though it wasn't as laugh out loud as I was expecting.

I have not read the book.

It was fun to spot all the references to other Kiwi films and ads.

Captain America : Civil War.
Standard Marvel fare. More an Avengers movie than Captain America (though a couple of leading Avengers missing I guess). Simple storyline as usual, but action packed and quite entertaining. 147 minutes didn't seem overly long as things moved along at pace.
Introduction of new characters (for this incarnation) was handled well . Had to wait a long time for Stan Lee's cameo.

Enjoyed the movie. Since our last video store closed there's no point in waiting for the Blu-ray to come out.

Pretty much this. Ant-Man and Spider-Man added some nice comic relief for an otherwise reasonably serious film. Still really enjoying this franchise and looking forward to more. 9/10

P.S. As you can expect there are two post-credits scenes to wait for if you so desire.

Captain America: Civil War - 8/10

Finally got round to seeing this last Friday night, and would echo the comments of most others who have reviewed it. It's an enjoyable film, with good action, and some welcome appearacnes by Spidermana nd Black Panther. Not being comic-book-knowledgeable it was interesting to see a (to me) lesser-known character like Black Panther get introduced, and a different take on Spiderman than has been shown in the past two film franchises.

Where CA:CW falls down, sadly, is in the story. I'd been following the reveals over the last year or so about what they were having a civil war over (and compared with the comic book version). As it played out on screen, though, it felt forced and unnecessary. Tony's anger and guilt issues feel forced and awkward. While they try to relate some of these things (e.g. the fallout from Ultron, especially what happened in Sokovia), his reaction seems overblown. They try and introduce his guilt over his parent's deaths, but it doesn't feel genuine to me, and when we reach the crescendo of the film's fight scenes, it is ostensibly driven by these foreshadowed events. Bur rather than moving organically from event to event it feels like carefully placed markers and milestones, ticking off the boxes to justify the big battle. The villain, such as he is, isn't as compelling as he should be. We are given a reason at the end why he does what he does, but it just made me raise my eyebrows - "really?" It's hard to be specific without giving away spoilers, but I wondered how this person could have engineered all the events we saw to achieve his goal. It would have required a feat of incredible coincidences and luck - I can see CinemaSins on Youtube have a field day with their "Everything Wrong With..." video and the big plot holes in this film.

Despite this, it's still an enjoyable film. The characters feel comfortable, and it's nice not having to be constantly reminded what happened before and who everyone is - the film can just get started and get on with being entertaining.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest on DVD - 10/10

Haven't seen this for quite a while and it hasn't aged a day. Magnificent. One of the best movies of all time.

Watched it with the wife last night - actually really enjoyed it. Cool story, well acted. Hugo Weaving is awesome. Australians are really good at making you hate them.

The Revenant;

Not sure what to give it. Too gory for me - literally couldn't stomach it, and massively implausible (his injuries sustained in the wilderness would have been largely unsurvivable with modern medicine let alone suddenly waking up as Bear Grylls from the brink of death. Maybe he died and it was all an afterlife dream?

Captain America is a bit of a dick. :/

And it seemed it was more about Iron Man than cap anyway.

I prefered Deadpool.

True story eh! Maybe creative and dramatic licence were applied liberally!

Ah Deadpool ... there's something about it that's not quite right for my liking/taste. Maybe it's the OTT violence or the OTT casual-ness of it all. I prefer the heavy and intense say Batman type dark rather than casual dark.

But perhaps that's how the comic shows it.

"Where To Invade Next"

An eye-opening doco by Michael Moore. 9/10

The eye-opener is the fact that we (Oz & NZ) seem to be going down the greed path of the US, when we should maybe be looking at Europe, and the way they treat their people.

I couldn't see Deadpool. There was one joke in the trailers with the line 'I pity the guy who pressures her into prom night sex' and for me that was it. I've taken flak for it and each to their own but I just couldn't find it funny.

Most recent film of note for me was The Invention of Lying. Not the greatest thing I've ever seen but definitely one of the most original. I did keep asking myself whether or not society would have fundamentally changed if the films central premise were true but as long as you can suspend the disbelief it's fun.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I was thinking of going to see Now You See Me 2, but then I saw the Stuff review.

Its one of the best reviews I have ever read! It is coherent, on-point, and completely, utterly scathing.

I'll have to watch the movie when I can stream it for free, just to see if it is as bad as the reviewer reckons!
