First time in my life that I’ve gone to a chemist and they say they can’t fill a prescription. Bargain Chemists, Lyall Bay NZ owned. Apparently they are suddenly not being funded. Pharmacist was a bit vague but there were a lot of signed petitions on the bench which I also signed. I don’t get it.

There was a thread about this on the Wellington Subreddit in the last week, but it seems to have disappeared. Sounded like they might be having problems down there as I seem to recall another location affected as well.

kiwifidget: Automatic sliding doors. They just dont "see" me, no matter how much I jump and wave my arms around, I just have to wait for someone else to show up and slipstream in behind them.

Do you have a habit of approaching automatic doors on some weird angle and slipping under the sensor before you wave your arms around? Apologies if I'm being nosy but this phenomena needs a full paranormal investigation ; ).

Another possibility is that you approach buildings after walking down a long street fully exposed to the Wellington wind and your outer layers are cooled to the point that the remaining temperature will not activate the infrared detector. Just one problem with that theory - most doors incorporate radar and PIR. Have you tried holding up a hot water bottle? ; ).

Don't wave. Take three steps backwards, and then walk forward.

Are you short, or approaching the door at a specific off-center angle? You might be staying underneath the sensor's active beam cone.

You can get too close to be detected, so don't start waving your arms. You may be under the cone.

Most automatic doors use microwave radar (motion) mounted high in door frame.

Some modern doors use optical/laser curtain sensors near the doorway to prevent closing on people. Pitch-black fabric or highly reflective materials can confuse these sensors.

And a funny fact, if you find a microwave radar motion turning on mysterious, it may be a sign someone is using a really old, faulty, improperly shielded microwave oven. Old Russian microwaves have this bad reputation.

Really cheap doors may use passive infrared (PIR) sensors (heat) . A LOT of Chinese cheap devices and toys and burglar arms use PIR. If you buy anything under $20 that uses motion detection, it's probably this.

The extremely common and inexpensive PIR detect heat with a tiny pyroelectric sensor. It generates an electric signal when exposed to infrared radiation (heat).

Ironically they don't measure temperature, but respond to hot things moving. The lenses look similar to a fly's eye. The lens splits the room into alternating bands or zones of detection As a warm body moves from one segment to another, the sensor sees a rapid pulse in infrared energy, triggering the motion signal.

PIR "Pet-immune" sensors filter out animals using size, height, and zone optical patterns, not temperature filtering.

Another odd fact, that could be misused, is a common bedsheet can defeat most PIR, because common fabrics like cotton, polyester, or canvas are completely opaque to infrared light. Heat rays cannot pass straight through a sheet.

@kiwifidget I know your pain. Approaching auto doors in my chair I often have to do crazy arm gymnastics to get them to see me. However they are not as bad as revolving doors. From personal experience (stupidity) don't try going through revolving doors in a wheelchair. Trust me it won't end well.

Normal ain't coming back, the crazy stays.
