Talkiet:
Careful Mark, what you're describing there is active and responsible parenting. If that was to catch on there'd be significantly less for people to get upset about.
Wade: I thought porn built the interwebz and e-commerce?!
Porn swayed the BD vs. HD-DVD war to conclusion too didn't it?!

BTR: I think it passes the parents responsibility onto the ISP. It also in a way restricts peoples freedom and privacy.
Lets say Joe Bloggs likes to look at adult websites therefore if he wants to do so under the what the OP article is proposing he has to ring up his ISP which he might be embarrassed about even though its perfectly legal just immoral to some, he then also has the risk of what happens if the call taker at the ISP recognises him which would add further embarrassment.
The internet in all its greatness allows people to feel they have a certain level of privacy and anonymity to go about their private life.
Just my 2cents.
Asmodeus: Utterly rubbish idea that is very easily circumvented and very difficult to enact in the first place. As others have said try proper parenting instead of just banning everything. Some teenagers are going to watch porn and others aren't. You can't stop the ones that are lol, trust me :)

ubergeeknz:
I've no problem with banning violent or illegal (child especially) porn. But to make people "opt in" to access any porn at all, it just seems like the wrong thing.

But I have been automatically "opted in" without actually wanting any of it.
If it gets blocked at ISP level I can protect myself from illegal content. Ie. accidentally stumbling across some child porn online.
I have no problem with goverment enfocing the laws of NZ onto ISP's. If you not happy then blame the laws.
If you choose to break the law why do people just expect ISP's to just allow them to do so? (using their infrastructure and service).
Edit: My view would have been so different if I was 10years younger :-)

This thread is not talking about the NZ Child Porn filter. It is talking about the proposed UK "all porn" filter (with opt-out) and would it be a good idea in NZ as well.

Pornographic content in and of itself is not illegal. Implementing this sort of filter would be enforcing the moral views of a section of the community, not a law. Very different.
