I thought porn built the interwebz and e-commerce?!

Porn swayed the BD vs. HD-DVD war to conclusion too didn't it?!

Talkiet:

Careful Mark, what you're describing there is active and responsible parenting. If that was to catch on there'd be significantly less for people to get upset about.

Cr@p!  I'll try to be less caring in future .. maybe leave matches and sharp knives laying around while I go out to Sky City  ;-)

Maybe they could make it an option when someone signs up to a new connection with an ISP. But then what makes an adult website, a porn website. Do online stores that sell adult toys fit into this category. Don't some trading websites also fit into that category. Personally I am not a fan of net censorship. One reason is because it is not foolproof anyway. Some websites will get incorrectly categorised as one, and it may be very difficult to get off the list. Likewise other ones will slip through.

worst idea ever.

On the other hand, I did see this which I thought was a pretty cool way for an ISP to implement it.

BTR: I think it passes the parents responsibility onto the ISP. It also in a way restricts peoples freedom and privacy.

Lets say Joe Bloggs likes to look at adult websites therefore if he wants to do so under the what the OP article is proposing he has to ring up his ISP which he might be embarrassed about even though its perfectly legal just immoral to some, he then also has the risk of what happens if the call taker at the ISP recognises him which would add further embarrassment.

The internet in all its greatness allows people to feel they have a certain level of privacy and anonymity to go about their private life.

Just my 2cents.

Aside from the slippery slope of government censorship, that's the big problem I have with this.  If someone wants continued access, they are now going on record as saying "yes, I want to be able to look at internet porn".  Who is that information going to be shared with?  Is that going to be used against you?  Are they going to start monitoring what *kind* of porn people look at?

I've no problem with banning violent or illegal (child especially) porn.  But to make people "opt in" to access any porn at all, it just seems like the wrong thing.

Utterly rubbish idea that is very easily circumvented and very difficult to enact in the first place. As others have said try proper parenting instead of just banning everything. Some teenagers are going to watch porn and others aren't. You can't stop the ones that are lol, trust me :)

Also this.  It's been proven time and again that banning desirable goods and/or services does not actually prevent access.  I bet theft of porno mags will go back up to pre internet levels!

Fixed your post for you... It's "pornography" not "phornography".

for a moment there I thought it was even funny. Easier to call it "porn".

But I have been automatically "opted in" without actually wanting any of it.

If it gets blocked at ISP level I can protect myself from illegal content. Ie. accidentally stumbling across some child porn online.

I have no problem with goverment enfocing the laws of NZ onto ISP's. If you not happy then blame the laws.

If you choose to break the law why do people just expect ISP's to just allow them to do so? (using their infrastructure and service).

Edit: My view would have been so different if I was 10years younger :-)

This thread is not talking about the NZ Child Porn filter.  It is talking about the proposed UK "all porn" filter (with opt-out) and would it be a good idea in NZ as well.

Thats why I said I have been automatically "opted in" without actually wanting any of it.

So yes it would be a good idea.

Pornographic content in and of itself is not illegal. Implementing this sort of filter would be enforcing the moral views of a section of the community, not a law. Very different.

I don't think there's any argument against child porn being illegal.  I think it's fair to say that it's pretty easy to define what is, and what isn't, child pornography.

The proposal in the UK is to restrict everyone's internet access to all kinds of pornography, illegal or not.  To access any kind of pornography (or whatever the state deems to be pornography), people would have to "opt in".  That's what we're talking about here.
