If National and its coalition partners don't get enough seats on the night, then Winston Peters will decide, and he'll jerk the country around for the next three weeks while he plays his games and theatrics.

nakedmolerat: Predict the election result #2014.
Rules:
No discussion on policy etc.
You're welcome to post more than 1.

My prediction:

National 42
Labour 30
Green 12
NZ first 8
Conservative 4.8
Mana Internet 3 (Hone lost)
Maori 0.5
Act 0.1
UF 0.1

Government: Labour + Green + NZ first

+1

Most likely outcome - NZ First to me always seem to come off like a right wing faction of the Labour Party and thus have a lot more in common with Labour than they do with National. The big decider is what happens with conservative because that could be the wild card - either it is real or the product of media hype. Assuming that Conservatives do get a seat you might see a National + Conservative + ACT + United Future + Maori. Keep in mind that the party with the largest vote as first dibs at trying to create a government so it depends on how willing the other parties are to turn down overtures from National in favour of giving Labour a shot.

Quite right!
We are able to say we have voted and encourage others to vote but can't "influence voters or discuss candidates or parties" as that is a breach of the electoral act.

Not sure where speculation on the result (without comments) fits into that.

Having waded knee deep in election BS for the last two months it is my fervent hope we don't have to go through it again for another 3 years.

Edit: On the more important ballot this week. Good choice Scotland.

I suggest the mods lock this thread until 7pm, just to play it safe :)

Part of me wishes that we change to a 5 year cycle so that:

1) We actually get to see the long term effects of policies.
2) Governments focus on governing rather than being in perpetual election mode.
3) So I don't need to deal with 2 months of electioneering etc.

I did ask Mauricio last night before starting this thread. No objection from him.
