Yep for sure.

In my experience DHL have always been incredibly, incredibly expensive. In a couple of cases DHL rates were 3x that of USPS, not worth it for parcels.

I don't mind USPS shipping times, about 7 - 10 days from USA.

Probably nothing since they can use non-USPS services.

Well they have already removed USPS as one of their options leaving only DHL and their own air freight express.

Right. So what other definition of "hermit kingdom" should we understand here, please? Because the current definition is basically of a country that isolates itself through policy and ideology and lives under a dictatorial system, which seems to be the definition most people have been using when criticising the New Zealand government response to covid, completely disregarding that it's not an ideology, it's not a dictatorship and it's not aligned with the one or two nations that truly deserve this title.

I don't think Hermit kingdom necessary implies dictatorship, rather a community closed off from the rest of society. Sir John Key (if he's one of the people you are referring to) used the term metaphorically to describe the New Zealand's self-imposed isolation from the rest of the world. And I would have to reread it, but my take away was he wasn't so much criticising the government's response so far, it was the lack of a detailed plan to reopen.

Anyway, I'm not here to debate politics and it wasn't my statement originally, so I'll leave this thread now.

Third world might have been somewhat of a pejorative statement but looking at the list of countries no other term springs to mind (apart possibly Brunei, Australia (!) )

Perhaps because of either covid policies causing logistics to be a bit harder (Australia and New Zealand) or politics (Sudan, Cuba) USPS decided to prioritise traffic to nations with more volume, to get things moving.

When you haven’t been able to return to your home country and family for coming on two years, not being able to (affordably) post a Christmas or birthday package home has a bigger impact on your sense of disconnect than if it was just a one off supply glitch.

RickD I'm not wrong indeed.

And the only reason is due to our health capacity to deal with covid cases, which you could say is also embarrassing compared to much of the rest of the 1st world. The only reason we went into lockdown, and eliminated it was to protect our health system. Look at the UK, they are already planning for lockdowns in winter, to protect their health system, despite high immunity and vaccination. Vaccination into the high 90's is needed before we risk importing covid into NZ.
But look at the UK now, they have petrol supply problems and many other problems too. Think most people would far rather be in NZ than the UK.

Will potentially be returned to the sender eventually which a lot of people in Australia have reported.

It would still be interesting to know the real reasons for this move. There is no shortage of airfreight capacity now (unlike last year and early 2021 when there was) but airfreight costs are still a lot higher. I wonder with the financial woes of USPS that they've simply decided to cut their losses and suspend carrying parcels they're probably losing money on?
