Ragnor: I bet everyone who has posted in this thread so far routinely travels at 55-60 in 50 zones when no one is looking.

Most people do those kinds of speeds everywhere. Theres always been an unwritten leaniancy, and cops don't pull you over as long as you're under 60.
If you're going 61 and they pull you over though, you'll get done for the full 11kph over the limit.

They don't have quotas. Quota implies a limit. They're allowed to ticket as many as they like...

Since everyone travels at 55-60 regardless and they only ticket you once you get to 60+, I propose they should increase the limit to 60 (in a lot of areas anyway) but then have zero tolerance and nail anyone who even goes 1km/h over the limit.

Seems to make more sens to me that having a limit that they allow people to exceed. There are 60kmh limits in some places, do they allow you to go to 70 there before they'll ticket you?

Speed cameras will only ticket you from 61kmh+, a cop with a handheld radar can ticket you at any speed over the limit (i.e. at 51kmh+ in a 50kmh zone).

And to those who complain of quotas and revenue gathering - if you're so concerned about their revenue then STOP GENERATING IT! Idiots.

The problem is that people will then adopt the mentality of travelling 65-70 in the 60 zones, and the stopping distance keeps getting bigger and bigger.

You are misinformed.. Sorry to burst your bubble guys but the leanacy of 10k has been taken away.. This happened a few months back, i read about it on the herald i think or it was on the news, anyways my partner got a ticket for doing 55 in a 50 zone a week ago (by speed camera).. Although it was only a $30 fine..

Sorry maybe it is 55km/h+ for speed cameras. I'm pretty sure they have to include a 10% margin of error.

The latest enforcement guide on the Police web site is dated 2007 and contains the following

"The following principles apply, other than in exceptional circumstances:

Drivers detected at a speed of 11km/h or more above the appropriate speed limit must be issued with the appropriate infringement notice or summons.

Drivers of heavy motor vehicles detected at a speed of 6km/h or more above the appropriate speed limit must be issued with the appropriate infringement notice or summons.

Drivers of vehicles towing light trailers detected at a speed of 6km/h or more above the applicable speed limit must be issued with an appropriate infringement notice or summons.

Drivers of vehicles detected within school zones at a speed of 5km/h or more above the applicable speed limit must be issued with the appropriate infringement notice or summons.

Drivers of any vehicles exceeding the speed limit by less than these stated thresholds may be issued with an infringement notice if their speed presents a risk to public safety in the prevailing circumstances.

These principles do not constitute a mandate for drivers to exceed the speed limit. In many circumstances exceeding the speed limit by any amount will pose road safety risks."

Was your partner in a school zone at the time? Not all schools are well signposted.

hmm well thats a good question. I will have to check with her tonight! she just accepted it and paid it.. wonder where the heck i heard about the leanancy being changed? unless it was a proposed idea..

I applaud you if your control of your accelerator pedal is that precise! The 50km limit with a slight buffer does me fine.

Oh, and who here can guarantee that their speedo is 100% accurate. Every car I've ever driven seems to OVERSTATE my speed. Perhaps for obvious reasons?

If you speed, you deserve to get a ticket.

If you are incapable of keeping your car at a certain speed (i.e. down a hill), then perhaps you should think about giving up driving, and taking up a career in drooling on the floor whilst you stare at the wall waiting for your next round of medication.

Leniency/margins are not for you to be able to speed, or fail to control your car, it is for the police to make a judgement call about what THEY (not YOU) percieve to be dangerous/unacceptable.

My late model Maxima, when doing 100kmh (verified by Police radar, and two GPS units agreed with the radar speed) shows 112kmh on the speedo. (I.e. if my car says 100kmh, i am WELL under the limit). Other vehicles of mine are more or less accurate (within 1-2kms between speedo and GPS). (And yes, my Maxima has factory standard wheels, and the correct size tyres, and has no modfications to any gear or diff ratio).

This year, I have had to make approximately ten full emergency stops due to vehicles, people, bikes, mobility scooters etc pulling out in front of me without looking. 1 involved my vehicle coming to rest against a person, 1 against a car, and 1 against a mobility scooter (all in Hastings city, where I tend to drive the LEAST). None were my fault (without exception they either failed to give way, or simply crossed the road directly into traffic without even looking), and I am positive that if I was speeding in any of those cases, someone would have been seriously hurt or killed. (Most of these problems have occurred in a two-roundabout part of Hastings (Townshend + Heretaunga Streets)), where I get to work by travelling on either side street, and main road travellers (cars and otherwise) drive/ride/scoot/walk straight through ignoring road rules and not even looking at all).

Speed at your own peril, as one day someone WILL cross your path at their own fault, but that will not stop you going to prison, and ruining theirs and their familys life when they die or are left injured, paralysed, brain damaged, whatever...

This was on Stuff a while back

"Drivers are warned police will issue tickets to those even slightly over the speed limit.
Constable James Gemmell says there is an incorrect perception police tolerate speeds of up to 10kmh over the legal limit.

They have a zero tolerance policy, especially outside schools, where they urge motorists to travel at 40kmh."

I suppose having a Constable deciding Police policy makes a change from the Secretary of the Police Association being the mouthpiece.

The Assistant Commissioner should take note and alter his instructions.

Edit: No one is suggesting that you should take up any slack by driving faster than the indicated speed.

10 emergency stops! That seems excessive, I'd avoid that area or drive more defensively :)

All the more reason to stay UNDER the limit instead of over it. Face it, if you drive at 50, you get tailgated, honked at, abused, etc.

why not make the limit 60 (if only in the interest of logic) with zero tolerance for breaching. If someone is doing 60 or near enough you shouldnt need to overtake them so in theory you should never exceed 60 anyway.

The net effect is similar to the leniency thing but it just means that there doesnt need to be any subjective ticketing and the majority would actually be driving around under the limit instead of over it

Slower limits around schools, etc should still apply. My brother got done for going 44 in a 40 zone past a school. Then again he deserved it as there was an electronic flashing speed sign and visible police presence...
