My news habit generally flicks between the guardian.co.uk and nzherald. Nz Herald tends to have the international stuff a day later - is that time zone related ?

I will admit most of it is rubbish, and fear mongering. Although, on (rare) occasion there is a bit of useful information.

No .. 9 to 5 reporters. Well not quite that either, if they are going to report it it has to be in their own words because of copyright, otherwise its just a link job.

I found a couple of genuine looking links but the rest of it was a fine example of everything that is wrong with the conspiracy scene. Most of the time when they DO discuss real scientific finds, they veer off into something completely different.

I recall a while ago noticing that the biggest headline on stuff was "NZ mentioned on the Daily Show" or something and then one of the sub-stories was some people being killed in a car accident. Great priorities.

I've recently discovered that http://www.3news.co.nz runs a pretty decent website.

Its not most people's first thought because "the news is only at 6pm" but in actual fact the website is constantly updated and it doesn't reek of infotainment like Stuff.co.nz and NZHerald do.

Local news the NZ herald is good for a skim for local news and opinion, but for international news from an international perspective ( non western), AlJazeera is quite informative

Depends on your political persuasion. Generally there are three news sources in the world:

Liberal
Conservative
AN independent publisher (who usually has an axe to grind eg. aliens, tabloids, conspiracies etc)

Often you find the same company will own both liberal and conservative "brands" of news. This means each editor will spin the same information for their readership. You see this most clearly in the UK.

I generally find that a combination of independent news sources is the best way to get a reasonable picture. Some of these include:

motherjones.com
newyorker.com
nytimes.com
guardian.co.uk
aljazeera.net
givemesomethingtoread.com

I find these are construed as rather liberal news sources, so balance can be struck by reading perspectives from:

nzherald.co.nz
bbc.co.uk

Finally I tend to top off my coverage with serious newstalk from www.thedailyshow.com

stuff.co.nz is the devil but it's layout is much easier on my mind than the nzherald site.

Given that you are posting on this site you will be using an rss reader for your news (eg. google reader). If you are a mere mortal the availability of this service will not have even occurred to you.

Comrades ... I too am looking for a new source of "Quality News" and as of today I have ceased my 60 year (i was a paper boy) long relationship with the "Dominion Post" due to the surprise price increase which now makes the Saturday Morning edition, in the Wellington region, $2.80 ... and much is flogged from Reuters or the BBC.

What is the "junk science"? So do you drink fluoride, and brush your teeth with 100% fluoride, if not why? Do you inject yourself with mercury? Do you regularly drink aspartame sweetened drinks? Do you pig out on candy packed with HFCS? Also, it's not a science site, further, you're obviously a science myther, what exactly do you mean by "science"? Do you mean not a mainstream science site? And since when was "mainstream" not junky? Tell me the benefits of relativity, what's it done since the first rocket since the moon? Oh I know, we have better rockets, thanks to EMC=2, or what? Tell me what heliocentrism has gained us. Oh wait, evolution, tell me what telling us we came from a random chance event, and some thingy doing something, and no, the Urey-Miller experiment isn't proof we're Frankensteins, it proved nothing but that even coming close to making a living thing requires millions of dollars and an extremely controlled environment, hardly "random". Or is it junk and insanity to you that Eritrea, Madagascar, Ethiopia, Swaziland, South Africa, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia still use DDT. Go tell them it's junk science to use DDT, that it's not mainstream, that they should just use deet, and that you'll lower the price for them. Just because something isn't mainstream science, aka atheist-approved scientific speak, or "based on hypothesis with two tests to confirm" or one or three, or whatever your magic number is, doesn't mean it's "junk", or that, just because it doesn't conform to your personal idea of a "test", or because it doesn't say, "according to the (atheist and Catholic) peer reviewed journal of Darwin Was the Smartiest and Showed Dumb Fundies Wrong, or say, "And after millions of years of evolution, and after we had sex with Neanderthals, the gun rights group moved to march on Washington" like some North Korean cultist atheist junk news, or some moronic BBC or Livescience junk atheism-weasel article, doesn't mean it's not scientific, or true, or of any significant value.

That you think the opposite, is what is insanity.

And if you are talking about Alex advertising some diet that is sketchy, so, every news site advertises some junk, CNN has those dumb "hottest nude celebs" ads or "what you didn't see her do in Lord of the Rings" (you missed this) junk. What's that have to do with being safer having a gun do defend yourself against an insane person who is gullible and thinks not eating fat is the magical convenient way to not be fat because mainstream health gurus and big pharma agrees?
