Our biggest news Website has the following Stories today:

"Man in Russia caught driving drunk after police chase."

"Woman pulled over in US for speeding"

Based on that information these are not worthy news stories IMHO so why are these on the Website you ask?

Apparently the man was naked and the woman was "nearly topless"  that is, she was wearing a see thru top.

BIG YAY!!!

These stories are not news but just filler stories to fill up the website.  Lame attempts to pull in readers based on the old rule - "Sex Sells"

Dumb.  <end Rant>

http://www.news.com.au/

Is a bigger version of the herald but has up-to-the-minute Breaking News from around the world. They beat the US publications hands down. It is now linking to news site around the globe so there is no lack of choice anymore. Check their site map..

http://twitter.com/#!/BreakingNews

Is International but can get blah.. but I use it for internal US stuff.

Truth is I agree with you on the quality of the NZ news media. When it comes down to it we are being treated like mushrooms.

Edit.. http://news.yahoo.com/world/
Most international news outlets cover this side side of the planet in a general way.. Yahoo world is good.

You are referring to stuff.co.nz?

What do you expect from an infotainment outlet owned by Fairfax?

Give http://www.scoop.co.nz a go.
It's probably the best out of the bad bunch.

The Christchurch Press (hosted by Stuff) is a better news balance than The Herald, with less distraction. Covers the main points with a little less of the herald's sensationalist tone:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/.

Not exactly what you want but worth trying for a few days.

Yes this is Stuff.co.nz... Will try Scoop for a while and see how we go :)

I actually like NZHerald but their biggest problem is they treat it like a newspaper most of the time and not a website - that is, their content doesn't change much beyond once a day...

Maybe that is the price to pay - in order to keep constant new material coming into the site you need to throw a bit of "trash" in there...

The only real source of quality news in NZ is Radio New Zealand....but you have to listen to it.

Morning Report, Nine-to-Noon and Checkpoint do a very good job of covering the major issues and events in NZ and doing it to a far greater level of detail and depth than anyone else....including the Herald and Stuff (who have more words, but too often less information).

Perhaps this is why the present government hates Radio New Zealand.

I do, but its still slow on the breaking news. They have a time lag on their articles and while it may say 2 hrs old.. quite often its 8hrs behind news.com.au (and no I dont work for news.com) :)

I tend to disagree, Alex Jones is controlled. He only talks about what he gets told too. If you are looking for true conspiracy news take a look at www.godlikeproductions.com. It is one of the largest forums on the Internet.

Use Google Reader and add your own sources. It's the best way to see what you want to see.

Well its certainly better than infowars.com, thats why I mentioned it. Neither of them are truly general news outlets.
