reven:  Their prices are still way overpriced on most things.

This is still the one thing I don't understand - most DSE branded products are priced way out of the market. I was in urgent need of a USB to serial adapter the other week and DSE was the closest place to look. I walked out when I saw they were $59 and headed to PB Tech who were $19 for one.

The 2TB HDD was a Canvio Basics for $89

It still shows on PriceSpy like that, but disappeared from DSE's website mid last week.

reven: 3rd time I went into a DSE in the last week or so because of the amazing sale... after the initial spend of $15 on two PS3 games for my son, I havent bought anything.  Their prices are still way overpriced on most things.

there amazing sale on a 2tb external hdd is noel leeming special price as well which has been that price for a while now and ends 31 december, so nothing to get excited over.   took things up to the container to get a price check on them, and yup still expensive.

I looked through all the so-called "hot" items on-line, saw several things that were the same or cheaper elsewhere, finally bought some $2 HDMI cables, which were the only things I wanted that were actually good deals.

wouldnt call a $2 hdmi cable a good deal, its an ok deal.  $2 shops, dx.com, ebay etc you can get hdmi cables for that price.  so yeah just an ok deal.

They had 80 cent HDMI cables for click and collect yesterday which were a good deal. Prices on website seem to change daily.

Dratsab: I was talking with a Dick Smith manager at a store near my work. He was telling me, employees he knew in other stores had told him their managers had hoarded all the good stuff so employees got first pick. Friends got second look. Hearsay, but an interesting thing to mention.

There was a story on the news here in Oz about them doing that just last week.

3 for $2 though was a good deal. Also 3 metre cable for $2 is quite good. 5metres for $5 isn't bad either

Went into the Riccarton branch today and there was a decent amount of stock ( not chocka bit OK ) but there didn't seem to be much on sale. A lot of sale signs up but there were all for the same half dozen things. What surprised me was the whole gaming section was gone and replaced by a kitchen appliances section. I don't know about you all but when I'm in the market for a blender Dick Smiths is not on my shortlist of places to go - especially at the prices they had.

I think their whole model for the stores is: These other stores make money so if we become exactly like them we'll make money too. The problem with that is, because of the limited product range in New Zealand, every body sells the exact same stuff so the only way to get the sale is to be cheaper and it just becomes a war of diminishing returns and Dick Smiths isn't that well of right now. The bigger companies can say "We'll take a financial  hit for the next year and wipe out Dick Smiths. With the reduced competition we can jack up the prices to get that lost money back."

Dick Smiths as it is is dead. It's just going through the motions. Hopefully someone will buy the name when all the assets are sold for whats left of their worth and try to revive the Dick Smiths of old. The interesting electronics store with all the bits and bobs you can't get elsewhere. Somewhere you want to go browse. Hopefully.

You don't choose a book by its cover but it does determine which ones you read.

But that shop already exists - JayCar.

DSE is where I go if JayCar hasn't got something I need but they never have it either... Not sure why I bother anymore going to DSE.

I remember when they brought in their appliance stores before Harvey Norman and other new competitors spread around the country. They soon started stripping out their traditional electronic components.
