Was there a decent variety of flavours?

I tend to avoid countdown, only going out of neseccity since they are the only place to get excelence cat food from, so am usually trying for an in and out shopping trip.

Three different flavours two "3" (Central American, Arabica) and one "4" - out of 5 intensity.

Has anyone used any of the plastic capsules (ie. non-Nespresso) in a Nespresso U machine?

Tried the new Avalanche capsules today. Advice: don't.

Avalanche, IMO don't make the best coffee anyway. Not a fan of capsules. Prefer the grinding and the tampering of the coffee to get it just right..I am a bit of a coffee snob but can't just bring myself to look at nespresso right now. I have an awesome like Saeco Via Vinecia I won years ago in a competition. Has been serviced once in about 7 years and still pumps out really good steam from it's 15 bar pump wand and produces a great crema from the bean. It's a winner in my eyes! Great little machine.

The taste. That's what went wrong.

Yup, it doesn't work.

The U has an auto-piercing mechanism that puts just enough pressure to pierce the Nespresso capsules.  When I had my U, I tried Warehouse and Countdown capsules and the machine would have trouble piercing the capsule properly which resulted in all sorts of issues.

I have a Lattissima now, and lately, i've been using either Nespresso capsules or PODiSTA capsules from, from Harvey Norman.
(Apparently someone from Nespresso told someone at Harvey Norman that using 3rd party capsules would void your warranty)

edit: PODiSTA also do hot chocolate, and tea... haven't tried 'em.

Baahahaha... Sounds like what I call "Visitor Coffee" :)

I'll take them off you if you can't stand the sight of 'em any more.

are you using the stock wand and pressurised portafilter?

i've modded mine with a unpressurized portafilter from seattle coffee gear - http://www.seattlecoffeegear.com/non-pressurized-portafilter-upgrade-for-saeco-and-starbucks-espresso-machines

also a steam wand from a breville 800es as the plastic panarello arm wasnt as good/easy (and i never used the panarello attachment).  http://coffeesnobs.com.au/brewing-equipment-entry-level-sub-500/32136-saeco-via-venezia-panarello-replace-steam-wand.html

cost me about $100 all up for the mods, i had a friend passing through washington for the portafilter, and grabbed the wand from ebay.  worth it though, much much nicer crema and milk!

Bought a packet of Avalanche to try and to say tasteless is an understatement, i had moderate hopes being a local company and all so reality was a bit of a disappointment :(

Of all the knock off pods i tried the best were the ones from the warehouse, but as i suspected they never continued to stock

Thanks... I think.
I used to buy beans regularly.  I would come home with fresh beans and pour my leftover older beans out of my hopper (grinder) and into a massive glass vase (with a nice candle sitting on top of all the beans)...  I affectionally called this my 'visitor coffee'.  It was a standing joke - I never actually ground any of these for visitors.  I did use them sometimes for re-tainting the machine after a good clean though.

My old man is a coffee Neanderthal and would probably enjoy a nice warm cup of tasteless coffee...

I look forward to experimenting.
