That our unplanned bathroom renovation, tipped to take 3 days and cost $2500, but took 8 weeks and cost twice that, is finally over and we can use our bathroom again and it looks pretty good.

A bigger reason to smile is, I assume, that you had a second bathroom and didn't have to hold it in for 8 weeks.

We have now started to do something about the senseless throwing away of food. The city supports projects that, for example, use an APP to broker food that is absolutely still good to use.

Sorry for the long post, but I want to get the message across:

We live near a rather posh hotel that participates in the project. Today I tested it and I have to say, it's a great thing. The participating establishments report their overcapacity to the portal and you can then reserve a surprise bag, pay for it and pick it up later. It is in no way in competition with the charities who need/collect larger quantities and wouldn't even go out for the few bags.
This morning, for example, I registered on the portal for the food of the hotel mentioned at around 9am and was then able to pick up a ready-packed, warm part of a breakfast buffet as lunch at 10.45am for a few euros, which was no more than 90 minutes old. And who would spurn four-star cuisine? It would be a real shame and makes no sense to me if something like that ended up in the food disposal container. Don't get me wrong - I have enough dough to pay for my food, but this senseless waste? The same works great with the numerous bakeries that participate - I'll pick up a bread/roll bag tomorrow at 5:45 pm for 30% of the price, the contents of which were made just a few hours earlier in the afternoon. You can even choose whether you want a normal, vegetarian or vegan diet. However, you should be a little flexible in terms of taste and accept rye bread instead of wheat bread (or vice versa), for example. Great thing, have a look around to see if there is or will be something like this in your area!

I use a Veon TV as monitor. Some time ago half the backlighting failed. Not worth the trouble to fix it, especially as it seems impossible to find out who actually manufactures these. But I was able to source an identical TV for $40 and that worked fine for awhile. Then it developed vertical stripes. Since I still had the other one, I thought I might be able to fix it by swapping the panel or T-Con board. So I opened the original one and powered it up just to see where the faulty backlighting was. To my surprise it worked perfectly! I think I must have jiggled a loose connection or something. I just assumed it was an LED failure. So I put it back together and it is working fine again. Finally something to smile about.

This makes me smile.

After the disappointment of this year's event being cancelled when we entered the Red traffic light setting, I was keen to secure my spot for 2023. It is limited to only 300 participants and the website crashed within 60s of the registration opening up so I it took some time for this confirmation email to come through.

Now the hard work begins!

Made me laugh when reading Apple saying it would "create a mountain of waste" if the legislation came into force. You mean like every time a company decides to change plugs, or when a device dies and is replaced and the old charger doesn't fit the new device?

It is probably along the lines that the chargers should no longer be in the box with new devices in order to prevent this. Those who need one can buy it separately with the device and those who don't can continue to use their old or more universal third-party charging device.

Taking off the B2 airtight mask after a total of close to 30 hours of continuous use.

The one minor good point is that since you don't get dehydrated since the moisture in your breath has no way out of the mask. OTOH the fresh air when you get to take the mask off again...

Just returned from a couple of weeks in a Britz campervan in the South Island, 80% of it on the West Coast. A number of things made me smile:

  • The complete lack of traffic on the West Coast. We were passed by exactly two vehicles between Hokitika and Franz Josef and met only 12 on a Monday morning/early afternoon.
  • The generally good condition of the roads.
  • The better than expected mobile phone coverage. Thanks Spark/Skinny.
  • The surprise of a mini cell-site in-a-box (container) at Roaring Billy Falls in the Haast river valley. Thanks Rural Connectivity Group I think.

Today being St.Angelo's day. For those who don't know, Angelo Moriondo, born 6 June 1851, was the inventor of the espresso machine.

Awsome but I doubt that he was canonised because of it. ;-)

That our nearly 19-year-old cat, who has pined for his brother since he died during lockdown 2, is much happier since 2 new kittens were added to our household. Our concern given how skittish and jumpy he has always been, was that he would bully them, but they are great mates and our old fella no longer keens for the other animal every night.
