a lot of us grew up with DSE gear and their funway kits. my first bit of soldering was the fm transmitter from the funway 2 book and i was hooked. my copy became more dog eared and worn out than your grandmas edmonds cooking book

Yeah, I too used to wander through looking at all those components and kits.
My comment was in reply to poster that DSE should rebrand to what it used to be in yee ole days, but that niche has been taken over too.

TVs,DVDs,Freeview, etc - Nope go to Harvey Normans/ JB Hifi or Noel Leemings
Electronic "Toys", e.g. helicopters etc - Go back to Jaycar
PS/Xbox Games - Off we go to EB Games/JB Hifi
Cameras - Noel Leemings, JB Hifi, Harvey Normans

All I can see is that DSE has no niche, its just doing what everyone else is, but with less stock, less variety and prices no different.

The have become Australasia's "Tandy/Radio Shack".

only a fool would go to EB Games, they are so overpriced and they wont be around for much longer either.

They will negotiate on price.

Here is the way it works (I believe).
Staff are on minimum wage + commission.
Staff has minimum sales targets each month (both volume and value)
The store has a "bottom line" where by the staff can sell something, but they loose their commission .

Near the end of the month, some staff will happily negotiate so they can meet their targets.

I have bought HDs from there because they were actually the cheapest, but their boxed DVD sets when on sale, and go in there when they have iTunes cards on sale.

The Nice thing about Palmy is that ALL the big box stores are relatively close to each other, so shopping around for the best price is easy.

But most NZ retailers are over priced which is why I import a lot of electronics, adding GST will simply encourage me to buy in more so that I can sell the excess off on Trademe to recover the additional costs, and I will STILL be cheaper than NZ retailers.

games on the shelf in most eb games in auckland are about $30 more than the jb hifi usually in the same mall. theyve never been willing to price match or anything whenever I asked. Ive given up on them.

This interests me. I have been looking for a number of small items recently and I was shocked by the price differences between NZ retailers and those on Aliexpress. As an example, a simple cigarette lighter extension at Supercheap is around $20. Even just a replacement plug is $10. On Aliexpress these are not more than two or three dollars US, including shipping. I expect things to be somewhat cheaper there, but 70 or 80 per cent less? What is wrong with this picture?

You wouldn't have the costs of national distribution between stores, staff wages, CGA obligation costs(accessment/repair etc), depreciation on stock held etc while trying to also make a profit and charging GST.

The difference is, that there is a recall in NZ when a NZ importer gets found out. If you get crap off aliexpress noone will tell you it's crap.

Big customers, bulk shipping costs sod all. This is why you can get US Fruit here in NZ for less than $2-3 a kg, and they use refrigerated containers. Yet when I wanted to ship something weighing in at 20Kg from the USA I was quoted up to $1000.

Big businesses also bulk buy, so their purchase cost is probably 1/2 what I can buy stuff for in China, maybe less.

But then again, I am not trying to have a Audi in the driveway, a beach batch up the Coromandel etc etc etc either.

NZ businesses also seem to want to operate in the least efficiant models possible because they do not understand technology and how it is quickly making them irrelevant. DSE shipping from random stores to people is fine if it was a premium same day delivery service.

Instead we have large retails forgetting about orders, not updating on dispatch, no tracking numbers. No CRM systems to know what the hell they have already asked from you and you have given them.

Also, the amount of crap that DS email out for sales is astounding. I hate that sales model.

And yet when ever I have had faulty products I have always got my money back with a LOT less agro than I would with a NZ retailer .

A work colleague bought in some radio controls servos, they were "fake" ones, he complained, got his money back and was told to keep the products as they were not worth the shipping back to China.
I have had one order not turn up, got my money back.

All the Arduino stuff I have bought has been very good quality, worked flawlessly and been a LOT cheaper than buying here in NZ. AND, I am willing to bet, most of it is probably the exact same product the NZ retailers are biting in.

And THAT is why I have multiple email addresses.

Businesses do NOT get my personal emil address, that is for friends and family
Trusted businesses (e.g. banks), get an address that I read/look at daily.
I have an address for junky stuff but will sometimes read email.
Realestate agents and other business who spam get the address kjwspamtrap@gmail.com, its mine, its legitimate, it just gets emptied every couple of months. They can spam me, sell that address, do what they like, but it is effectively worthless. I have learned the hardware that too many companies believe they are entitled to your personal information so they can on sell it for extra revenue. Now they can go F themselves.

Good old Google and Microsoft supplying me the email addresses for free, so it costs me nothing to ensure a little more privacy.

I'm guessing you mean 'Australian businesses located in New Zealand also seems to want to...'?
