Not really a small thing, but it sure does annoy me. I am getting sick and tired of conspiracy theory trolls taking over Internet forums so they can spew their ignorant, anti-science tripe denigrating the learning, hard work and commitment of dedicated people who have spent many years studying their area of specialty.

Climate change deniers are a particularly egregious example of this, but so are the anti-fluoridation brigade, the anti-vaccination mob, and all those who dismiss years of painstakingly accumulated knowledge and research because some self-styled ‘expert’ with dubious credentials is prepared to tell them whatever they want to hear.

The vaccination deniers are the worst of the lot, because they put their stupidity ahead of the welfare of their children. Vaccination is one of the most wonderful discoveries ever made. It can protect from, even eradicate, terrible diseases. Yet some people value stupidity and ignorance above this amazing knowledge.

This complaint, though, is about the trolls. Everyone should have a right to express whatever they think, but those of us who get tired of hearing their uninformed nonsense should also have a right to a little respite. I don’t want to have to endlessly debate things that have already been established beyond reasonable doubt. If you really think 97% of the world’s reputable scientists are wrong, or are engaged in some kind of vast conspiracy to deceive the rest of us, you are already beyond hope. So just shut up and let the rest of us get on with it.

For the record, I was vaccinated again measles, polio, and any number of other ugly diseases as a child, and against smallpox, yellow fever, and any number of additional diseases as a travelling adult. I have consumed great quantities of fluoride since childhood in my drinking water and toothpaste and at the age of nearly 73, am still in perfect health. I have never had a health problem of any kind, not with my bones, joints, kidneys or anything else. So please, trolls, take your messages of ignorance somewhere else. I am tired of seeing them.

I was in Beverley Hills in 08. Stopped outside this mansion, owned by some Italian director. The right drive had a Rolls, the left drive had a Rolls coupe, lined up against the house were 4 or 5 Ferraris, each a different colour.

I guess they had 4 or 5 kids... :-)

I can't remember now. Please check which of them has a big dent in the door that looks suspiciously like the front end of a supermarket trolley. tongue-out

Prats that for no apparent reason wish to change into the lane you're occupying, on the motorway at 12am on a Saturday night, and consider it is you that should vary your speed to do so (assumed because they put their indicator on and made no attempt to move into a clear space in front of or behind me - I'm on cruise control at the 80km/h limit and that's where I'm staying until I wish to change lane). This particular prat was entering SH16 from the port while I was entering SH16 from SH1 northbound. There's no exit until Western Springs - a couple of km away and there's an on-ramp at Newton Road that merges into the left lane of the motorway. I'm all for getting in the correct lane early, not diving across 3 lanes of traffic to exit across the flush median but this clown was taking it to the ridiculous.

PhantomNVD: The Self entitled plonker who thinks his car is so special it deserves two slots in a busy car park

I specifically target those plonkers and park hard against their driver's door.

Windows 10 randomly deciding to tamper with my BIOS settings (are they still called that?) and set itself as the primary boot device.

Or changing the order of your audio devices after an update. (USB Audio / Virtual Audio Cable / Motherboard Audio etc)

Very frustrating!

Fortunately I haven't run into that one but I can imagine how annoying it is.

I actually have a book published way back in 1993 about how to write good software, and a lot of it is still as relevant today as it was back then. One of the things explicitly called out is that software should never, ever change BIOS settings. The rationale is that a "normal" user wouldn't have a clue how to revert one of those changes.

People who use the term "climate change deniers" and thereby assert that those who have doubts about the anthropogenic causes of climate change are actually denying that a climate that has always changed since the big bang is still changing.

Oh, and those who claim any thing involving "consensus" and science!

And the unspoken parallel that places then in the same sphere as what the Germans call 'holocaust deniers'by using the same phrase as if the two things are somehow similar.

Some deny that the climate is changing at all (they seem to see it as 'normal variance') and can be accurately termed deniers. Others simply reject the notion that this is due to human activity. I guess those people are not denying that the climate is changing, just that there is anything we can do about it.

Everyone who breathes affects the climate, so the anthropogenic aspect is not in doubt. The only question is the extent to which this occurs, and how much the planet can absorb.

There is actually a great deal of consensus in science, as well as disagreement. When sufficient evidence for something becomes accepted, there is consensus. All scientists agree with the consensus that the earth is round, and the sun is the centre of the solar system. Many scientists agree that climate change in the direction of global warming is real and serious, though some are uncertain. Over time we will know, and there will be consensus. I hope that will happen before the consensus is that it has become too late to do anything.

I for one deeply resent that comparison. Think about what you are saying.
