SJB:

Bodies - Netflix - 6/10

Time travelling murder mystery. The same body turns up in 4 different eras and detectives in each era must solve the mystery to stop a nuclear terrorist attack in London.

Storyline is a bit predictable after a while and the dialogue and acting a bit wooden but it's good enough to fill a wet afternoon.

Personally 8/10

Stephen Graham was outstanding and I loved the twists. Really hope for a sequel.

I thought it was a poor man's Dark, only nowhere near as clever or good. Just my opinion though.

Watched this to episode 3 1/2 and declared it a waste of time (no pun intended).

I did try giving it some time but it never really takes off for me.

So after 11 seasons, the Walking Dead finished for me last night. I really felt like the whole of the final season was totally incoherent, even though I did enjoy some elements of it. Not enough storylines were tied up, all part of splitting off into the WD Universe. I am not sure how that's going to work out.

I am glad I saw it through to the end, it was a worthwhile series.

Norman Reedus, Josh McDermitt, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were standout performers for me.

Doctor Who - The Star Beast (BBC iPlayer): 9/10

I really enjoyed the first of the three anniversary specials they are making, ahead of Ncuti Gawa's debut as the Doctor.  It was a huge amount of fun to have David Tennant reprise his role, along with Catherine Tate's Donna Noble.  It managed to achieve the remarkable feat of bringing in just the right amount of nostalgia for one of the best combinations of Doctor/companion (it's a close-run thing with 11 and Amy Pond, or 10 and Rose Tyler), whilst still moving forward and not disrespecting the previous stories and developments of later Doctors.

I read a comment on Gizmodo which I think perfectly captured what makes this Russell T Davies story different (arguably, better) than the later stories from Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall.  The commenter noted that "Classic Who" was a narrative-based serial based around cliffhangers (driven largely by the format of the show as 90-120 minute serials), whereas "Nu Who" is character-driven drama based on emotional bonds and epiphanies.  Consequently, the classic show was about solving problems, whereas the new show is about helping people. Where "Nu Who" has morphed over the years is a switch back to the kind of stories that were shown in "Classic Who", with an emphasis on stories about solving problems.  I don't know if I agree with this completely, but I the general idea makes sense to me.  And this is what The Star Beast gets right - the story and its "solution" is less important that how it treats it characters, how it focusses on the people in the story.  It has heart, and feels very human.

I can't remember the last time I watched an episode of Doctor Who that I wanted to re-watch almost immediately (maybe the first season of Matt Smith's tenure as the Doctor).  While there have been some good episodes with Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker, I don't think I've rewatched any of those episodes since they were broadcast.

And just to be clear, I don't think this is a case of wanting to hide amongst nostalgia - I enjoyed Jodie Whittaker's portrayal, and I'm pretty excited to see what Ncuti Gawa brings to the role.  I think they struck a really good balance with this show, and are setting it up well for the next era.

Apparently on Disney Plus starting on 3rd Dec.

Not Happy Jan!

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

We've been watching "Educators" on TVNZ+

It's risqué, but quite relatable. And very funny.

I knew Doctor Who was going to be shown internationally via Disney+ but I didn't realise it was so delayed.  Colour me pleased to have access to iPlayer (and the full back catalogue of all previous Who episodes back to 1963 - where they still exist)

Beacon 23 a low budget Sciifi thriller based aboard a space lighthouse. Some good acting & actors but so far nothing really stands as as far as the story telling goes. I'll stick with it for the rest of the season & see where it leads. What director/production was thinking dressing the lead actress Lena Headey to look like a bag lady is anyone guess 🤷

Started watching Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

The audio mixing is really bad and is thoroughly ruining my watching experience.

I haven't watched it yet so getting a bit ahead of myself but I know this show has a bit of love around here so thought I would share to make sure we don't miss it.

Season 3 of Slow Horses has just started on Apple TV+. The first two episodes are available now with a new episode released per week thereafter.

Finished Dark S2. How this show seems to have missed people I have no idea because it's damn great watching and so mentally stimulating as well.

I feel people are just shit honestly in that they can't handle subtitles.

I think you'll find it was massively popular and you're very late to it.

Watched S1 when it originally aired on Netflix but had nobody interested in it around me. We are redoing from the beginning, but all the people who watch stuff similar to this that I've talked to give me blank stares when I mention it. They are intrigued but then realise it's not in english and just shut down.

EDIT: My beef is with this objection to subtitles. I grew up in Australia with SBS being the source of odd ball foreign television on FTA; anime, martial arts films and other cult oddities not in English. You just did the subtitles because you had no choice. I find it sincerely frustrating when I give a good suggestion when somebody says they want something to watch and give me the 'nah I don't do subtitles'.
