SomeoneSomewhere:

Imports to an NZ business don't charge GST; the NZ business charges the GST when they sell the product.

The importer has to pay GST when the goods are imported and charges GST when they sell the goods. The import GST gets deducted from the sales GST when it gets sold so they only pay the difference to IRD on sale.

When at Woolworths I often see random cold food (mince, yoghurt, ice cream) sitting in the drinks fridge by the checkout. I figured customers were changing their minds and didn't have the decency to either return the item to its proper place or tell a staff member that they no longer want it.

Until today, when I found that it's actually the staff who are dropping things in there.

In NZ many (myself included) frequently moan about over the top health & safety.

I'm in Uzbekistan on holiday at the moment and this place is the other extreme.  The video isn't great sorry, but the guy standing up straight is keeping the paving tile in place that the other one is cutting, and yes, that's a pair of slides he's wearing.  This isn't an isolated event either, there's stuff like this going on all over the place and in the three days I've been here so far I haven't seen a single orange cone.

It reminds me a bit of how people will travel somewhere like Vietnam and then come back and comment on how the traffic just weaves in amongst other traffic and pedestrians etc. without accidents, thereby concluding our safety focus is over the top. But the statistics show that Vietnam has, per capita, more than four times the traffic-related death rate as NZ, and NZ already isn't great compared with other developed countries.

Shared traffic pedestrian places without separation a good safer way.
Based on how its safer as drivers will drive more slowly because of uncertainty.
Same idea as not having seatbelts and airbags as these encourage dangerous driving.

Len Brown's assistant hits pedestrian in 'shared space'
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/len-browns-assistant-hits-pedestrian-in-shared-space/

The victim who had pelvis broken in 4 places , arm in two, and torn knee ligaments.
Suffered lifelong disability that was somewhat glossed over. She'll be right.

Looking at the VIGI NVR10004H-4P on PB Tech.

Their website says commercial only sales with no price listed, but they are selling it on Trade Me with no restrictions?

This happened about 10 years ago. Unless you're reporting on how the victim is coping now why dig it up?

The driving here is not dissimilar to Vietnam but not quite as chaotic. They do actually stop for traffic lights and pedestrian crossings and no mopeds to contend with.  I just have put my faith in the driver when catching a Yandex (central Asian version of Uber).  They'll all quite happily be on their phones at the same time an 90% of people don't wear seatbelts. My hearts skips a beat every time I see a toddler bouncing around in the passenger seat or leaning on the dash enjoying the view out of the windscreen.

Uzbekistan: 2,203 fatalities and 8,901 injured in road accidents in 2024 (population is 37 million)

Witnessed a wee crash last night actually, minor nose-to-tail with no injuries fortunately.

I also enjoyed the application of Muphry's Law in NightStalker's post.

"If you write anything criticising editing or proofreading, there will be a fault of some kind in what you have written."

In this case, misspelling "stationery" as "stationary".

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Even as a teenager I often got the spelling wrong until my first boss said “Remember that stationery has an e and so does envelope.” Haven’t spelt it wrong since. 😀
